However, it’s indeed a more visceral endeavour with less mass-appealing sonority. Whether the music on Jack in the Box suits your taste or not, it’s hard to dismiss this album as an artistic statement rather than just chapter 1/7 of BTS proving they can also make money in ways beyond official group releases.

Simply put, Jack In The Box is a great record. It can be fun and upbeat when you solely consider the music, but it’s devastating and melancholic once you take a look at the lyrics. Yes, it can be argued that some tracks tend to blend with one another due to the sonical familiarity, but this is offset by the clever track list.

While the brevity of the album helps avoid any bloat, it does also leave the final product a touch unfinished. That said, there’s so much here to love and, perhaps, most excitingly, in the end, this is clearly just a start for the next chapter in J-Hope’s career.

As a project ‘Jack In The Box’ feels personal. It is refreshing to see J-hope experiment with genres not normally associated with his artistry, resulting in a second album that completely juxtaposes his previous sound.

Still, it’s a solid start, and with six more members (you’d imagine) still to come, there will be more to pick apart. Anyone worried that a truly sublime solo album could turn this indefinite BTS break into a definite one, though, can probably rest easy for now.
