The Odyssey
Overall, this album is definitely an R&B album. Kehlani's obvious talent shines through on an album like this. I don't think fans(including me) are disappointed with this one.
-
Stereoboard
Despite its execution occasionally not reaching the levels of its ambition, this is Kehlani’s best work to date. Her growing maturity as a creative voice is clear, and ‘It Was Good Until It Wasn't’ provides a roster of good tracks that permit us to anticipate truly great ones in future.
-
Pitchfork
she’s becoming an increasingly agile performer, rapping, singing, and everything in between. It Was Good Until It Wasn’t channels all those skills into sterling R&B that feels like a homecoming of sorts.
-
Uproxx
The think pieces and comments from the know-it-alls become null and void once the realization arrives that Kehlani left it all in the bedroom, a quality that deserves to be, if anything, celebrated and heralded.
-
Clash Magazine
R&B icon delivers on a stunning new album.
-
The Guardian
Walking with impressive confidence along the line that separates commercialism from experimentation, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t doesn’t need an accompanying soap opera to sell it, but it’s got one anyway.
-
Ratings Game Music
Throughout It Was All Good Until It Wasn’t, she doesn’t mind coming across like an erratic, horny, conflicted, and troubled individual. As someone who has never been in love with a spotlight on me, I admire Kehlani for being a sexy-ass open book.
-
Rated R&B
With hints of cool jazz and mellow pop-infused into this profound new sound, Kehlani may shake the table for fans of her past work, yet attract the attention of a broader audience in the process.
-
NME
The dark and sexy new songs shine their brightest when coated with a layer of her previous sparkle; which makes the artist’s second album a fine but frustrating release.
-
The Independent
Californian artist’s crystalline vocals shine through arrangements of sedate beats, jazz piano motifs, and luxurious twangs of Spanish guitar.
-
Popdust
The singer's sophmore album is her strongest project yet.
-
The Line of Best Fit
her ability to dissect her own emotional vulnerability with cutting, incisive songwriting – all whilst retaining her pop-inspired sensibilities. It is this sensibility that underpins the success of It Was Good Until It Wasn’t.
-
The Times
an album for long summer nights.
-
HipHop DX
Kehlani's 'It Was Good Until It Wasn't' Proves Her Worth But Never Dazzles.
-
The Fresh Committee
The hype far outweighs the quality here as Kehlani’s creative vision remains blurry at best. Yet she improves with consistency with each passing year, more than most can say.
-
Stereogum
It’s the best version of Kehlani yet and one of the most contagiously listenable albums of the year.
-
The Musical Hype
It Was Good Until It Wasn’t is an enjoyable contemporary R&B effort that finds Kehlani ‘keeping it 100’ from start to finish.
-
MSN
slick, polished and boasting a seriously impressive roster of collaborations.
-
musicOMH
As the last plucked notes ring out into the ether, we are left with a record that doesn’t always astound but has a fair few enjoyable moments, and some very effective vocal performances.
-
The Post
The entire album feels like a cleansing that chronicles the stages of healing. In the end, Kehlani is open to the truth: It was good until it wasn’t.
-
Blackaphilliyated
Her flow is unmatched and it shows on her latest album, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t.
-
The Upcoming
The production is classy, sexy and made for the bedroom.
-
All Music
a rare moment of pure sweetness amid the surrounding expressions of anguish, lust, regret, and resignation.
-
Hit Up Ange
In spite of the current situation of the world, it seems Kehlani’s creative juices are overflowing and the world is more than ready for her new sound.
-
wrongmog
Sonically, it can blend a little into one, but the closing feature from the late rapper Lexii, a friend and collaborator of Kehlani’s, is a rousing, poignant end to a largely accomplished set.
-
Music Matters Media
Overall, the album doesn’t seem tied together musically as much as it is lyric-wise.
-
Wonderland Magazine
At times it’s mournful, but ultimately contemplative, playfully self-aware, without losing that early rawness she brought to the table.
-
MusicXclusives
Kehlani delivers an R&B album that showcases a woman who may have gone through a terrible breakup, but everything doesn’t have to be hurt and hardened while there’s still hope for the future in quest for a true deserving love. What will be next of Kehlani’s journey? Only time will tell, but she’s only going up on the trajectory she’s been on lately!
