If In These Silent Days, with its range of styles and conflicting themes, is any indication, she is both closer to and further from this higher level of consciousness than ever before.

With her talent and charisma, and this group around her, it’s no wonder Carlile is the star she was always meant to be, and there’s certainly nothing about In These Silent Days that will stop her rise.

Though the piano ballads are forgettable, the rest of In These Silent Days work around Carlile’s weaknesses and play up her strengths. It’s a very good album—though it could’ve been better.

In These Silent Days may not be as great as Blue—very few albums are—but it shouldn’t disappoint fans of Brandi Carlile. With her voice in better shape than ever and her heart still firmly on her sleeve, it should help her win even more people over.

  • The Young Folks

it’s the most compassionate and unflinching collection of the artist’s career thanks to the fresh clarity her memoir’s reflection and self-examination provided her. Carlile found plenty of empathy and encouragement, resistance and recovery, and confession and acceptance when she retreated, but she also found a new meaning in the otherworldy haze of introspection.

Carlile sings tenderly, earnestly, soothing the souls of listeners of all ages. Especially after the past couple of years of collective turmoil, many of us have been diving into our psyches to reflect. Carlile reminds us to use these reflective periods as processes of forgiveness, not punishment.

Carlile’s voice is perfectly suited for everything she writes, while the production throughout the record finds the perfect balance. Silence – even metaphorical – has rarely made more meaningful noise when it does on In These Silent Days.

  • Renowned For Sound

In These Silent Days feels like a companion piece to Carlile’s memoir. It is lyrically self-reflective with songs that feel like a lullaby (Stay Gentle) and others that feel like a call for help (When You’re Wrong). Carlile has used her time in isolation to study her past and in doing so has created an autobiographical album; an album that shows us that there is light at the end of the tunnel if we learn from our mistakes.

In the end, Carlile’s bumps in the road and temporary setbacks of the past serve as motivation to build a life on a solid foundation that can stand the winds of change in a way that provides protection from the imperfections that challenge us daily.

It’s all done well. It’s all done supremely well, actually. If these are our times, this album has fixed its place in our feeling of it and, we may come to see, in our telling of it.

‘In These Silent Days’ is another triumphant body of work from Carlile. She has set her own high bar with her previous work and this album meets them with ease. How Carlile isn’t a bigger commercial success is quite baffling but this album should see her add even more awards to her already jaw-dropping haul. ‘In These Silent Days’ is an album that people can put on to help them process what we’ve all been through the past 18 months and no artist has captured that quite so eloquently as Carlile has.

  • Off the Record

Carlile has created a phenomenal, compelling and cohesive record – a cinematic landscape, sonically and lyrically. Carlile is a genre unto itself, offering an important, authentic and vulnerable voice in the musical landscape, an artist who consistently understands and perceives where she wants her place to be in musical history and follows that course through.

All in all, this album was great. Brandi Carlile tells a story with each song. That quality of songwriting and storytelling is something that not a lot of today’s artists have. I recommend that people listen to this album. It will not disappoint.
