Wilson & Alroy's Record Reviews
Stevie here is relying on synthesizers rather than using them for novel effects, and the songs, while effective, are mostly missing that touch of crazy genius we've come to associate with him.

John McFerrin Music Reviews
By the standards of classic Stevie Wonder, this album is a colossal disappointment, but by the more realistic standards of post-classic Stevie Wonder, this is about as good as things were going to get for a little while.

Only Solitaire
Maybe this is unsubstantial Eighties pop, but it's all drenched in Stevie's incredible sense of melody nevertheless.

Compare this to the others in your head and you'll be hard-pressed to specify what's missing

In sum, not that bad; mildly entertaining, but from Stevie I expect a lot more.

Rolling Stone
Wonder seems immune to the current epidemic of posturing self-importance, and with his unforced optimism and his no-sweat audio perfectionism, he makes your ears happy, again and again. On In Square Circle, he’s as irresistible as ever.

All Music
nothing stands as better evidence of how cyclical the pop experience is than the response to In Square Circle. Wonder actually wrote some superb songs, and several, like "Overjoyed" and "I Love You Too Much," were superior to the hit single "Part-Time Lover."
