In Our Lifetime?

In Our Lifetime is the sixteenth studio album by soul musician Marvin Gaye, released January 15, 1981, on Motown label Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place at Marvin's Room in Los Angeles, California, Seawest Recording Studio in Honolulu, Hawaii, and at Odyssey Studios in London, England, throughout 1979 and 1980 (and abruptly remixed in 1981 by Motown). The album cover was designed by Neil Breeden. Gaye's final album for Motown before leaving for Columbia Records, the album was the follow-up to the commercial failure of Here, My Dear, a double album which chronicled the singer's divorce from Anna Gordy. Entirely written, produced, arranged, and mixed by Gaye, In Our Lifetime was a departure for Gaye from the disco stylings of his previous two studio efforts and was seen as one of the best albums of the singer's late-Motown period. -Wikipedia

though the words are confused, at least they're sincere, which in an age of irony has its advantages

This is one funky record, and the tunes here are a lot more distinct from each other than the ones on Let's Get It On, complete with mood and tempo shifts

I keep listening to this, wondering why it doesn't stick in my mind, and I'm coming to the conclusion that it's just unmemorable.

The problem is that none of the songs really grab me, and once the record's over I have no interest in playing it again.

In Our Lifetime is one of his finest later albums and captures him as his craft was maturing and becoming more multifaceted.

2007 - Gaye’s mixes, with his vocals double and treble tracked, are clearly superior, and its songs are better sequenced.

2007 - the music on this classic record remains intensely personal while sparing listeners the anguish that nearly drove its composer insane

In Our Lifetime is an album perhaps of interest to Gaye fanatics, but everyone else should go to the other albums first.

2007 - Though this is not a classic, as a significant chapter in the life of Marvin Pentz Gaye it's certainly worth investigating.
