Not too little, not too much. Sivan’s EP is the Goldilocks of quarantine.

Rather than significantly alter or challenge the singer’s previous approach, the EP merely embellishes it.

While most of us are stuck, in both situation and sentiment, music has become our only way of leaving, which is exactly what this album does. You press play and a door opens, of which Sivan’s voice feels like gasoline; it pumps up you up but flows fluidly. His vocality is so warm and effortless, which, again, are qualities people WANT right now! Thus, In A Dream, for sure, is one of the best EPs of 2020.

There’s a vibrance to this EP, far beyond the typical pop breakup album, that elevates it. It’s not just about heartbreak, but the reasons and ramifications of it. It’s also not just typical pop, borrowing from far more niche and far more diverse corners of music than many other genres would ever allow. In a Dream is a prime example of why not only pop music, but Troye Sivan, shouldn’t be underestimated.

  • A Bit of Pop Music

Troye Sivan delivered a perfectly concise EP that highlights his strengths as a pop star while continuing to deepen the personal stories he tells in his lyrics. It might not be the most poppy work that will gain him massive radio hits, but it it his most uncompromised, hard hitting collection of tracks that defines him as an artist.

Hot damn! Mere moments into this concept EP’s opener, you’ll be hypnotised by Troye Sivan’s lilting, conversational vocal delivery.

In a Dream despite not being the next full length album, represents the best parts from a relevant young artist. The part he plays as a roll model for young LGBTQ people is still as important as ever.

The Australian pop singer finds freedom in the EP format, breaking the family-friendly veneer of past releases and serving up his most idiosyncratic music yet.

This whole EP is an excitingly experimental affair that hears Sivan giving you pure heart and soul in a time that we need it most. There are moments to dance to, and there are moments to cry and reflect to. And people will walk away from listening to this EP feeling understood in times of darkness, and that’s a really beautiful thing.

I love this EP so much. My favourite music this year has all been heavily inspired by the 1980s in its production and this trend certainly continues with ‘In a Dream.’ The album creates a nostalgic dreamscape, with masterfully relatable and heartbreaking lyrics. I’ve always been a huge fan of Sivan, but this EP makes me feel like he’s maturing – and that excites me to no end.
