Nothing on I Decided., however, suggests that he has gained perspective worth sharing or to which he should devote a whole album. He continues to be a talented pop act attempting to be something he is not.

Big Sean is still finding himself. On I Decided, a mostly searing collection of introspective rhymes and light trap beats, he comes one step closer to a more self-assured sense of his space in the pantheon of today’s most powerful and famous rappers.

Overall, I Decided is a well-rounded album full of deep emotion delivered in street packaging. Exploring different scenarios and situations, lusty and heavy beats combined with wider ranges and verses presented in early days of Rap and R&B make it a potent piece of work.

On I Decided, these subjects don’t always make for the most engaging album, but they reflect Big Sean’s character. He’s a man of integrity, a positive force in the world, and as solid a role model as any. Your mother will love him.

I Decided doesn’t push boundaries — instead, it’s a skilled synthesis of the many strains of rap currently flourishing, from nods to Drake and Future to the Chance-tinged gospel of “Bigger Than Me.”

Ultimately, it’s Sean’s nonsensical, uneven content that keeps him and I Decided from a leap into the upper echelon of rap. He’s right there, but this grasp at a conceptual album falls just short.
