  • Pitchfork

Pop singer Ari Leff advocates powerfully for being forthright about your feelings, but his album’s whopping 21-song tracklist is underwhelming and repetitive.

How I’m Feeling isn’t designed to knock the socks off whole populations. Rather, its lightly worn melodies and generically hip sonics seem machine-tooled to creep into its target audience’s subconscious, where its tales of youthful disaffection can be readily absorbed into their own tumultuous inner worlds.

It’s the perfect conclusion to an album which speaks to the various anxieties of both its subject and its listeners, and a song destined for slightly watery-eyed but vitalising sing-alongs.

Ultimately, ~ how I’m feeling ~ is a journey in acceptance of changes, plateaus, and mostly, growing up and into adulthood. The magic in Lauv’s music is in how he can communicate universal struggles and emotions in such a lighthearted, almost fun, and accessible way.

  • RIOT

how i’m feeling is a coming-of-age story rooted in identity-crisis, existentialism and acceptance of the less than savoury parts of oneself. However, there’s so much left unexplored in lieu of star-studded features, and that’s the biggest let down of the album – there was so much potential to the album, and a long tracklist to unpack it all, but it feels like far too little was said in the end.

This is a powerful, beautiful debut, but – despite its big name collabs – Lauv's 21-track album is way too long.

    a shallow shot at ubiquity.

Instead of following industry standards, the record acts as a refreshing take on pop music by taking an honest introspective look on himself.

Ari “Lauv’ Leff has made a fun debut pop album with a dark side. This is depression you can sing along to.

Lauv incorporated some fast-paced, cheery music while also bringing in melancholy-type instrumentals, but this album overall is not one to overwhelm its listeners with the different emotions it comes with. There is a balance and one can notice this while listening.

Overall, How I’m Feeling can be considered a solid debut that shows the promise many had hoped for Lauv as an artist. Though the sheer length of the album may seem excessive, all songs put forth are deserving of a listen, an impressive feat for an artist to achieve so soon in their career.

Sure, some songs are a little basic and may not end up on all of my playlists, but some of them have become some of my favorites for the year. And there’s 21 songs in the work, so I give Lauv some slack — not all of them can be winners, but neither are we.

For me this album is proof on concept for Lauv possibly becoming one of the next biggest artists in music however we’ll see how this album does and if he can refine his sound even more on a follow up album.

These final minutes of the album bring together Lauv’s feelings, combined with the dilemma we all regularly face. It becomes clear how similar we are to Lauv — the man who just released an hour-long album about being alone.

Lauv’s declaration that he is “so tired of love songs” will actually leave listeners feeling cheerful and humming along to its catchy tune.

All in all, I recommend Lauv’s album “~how i’m feeling~” for people who enjoy pop music, are looking for good songs to put on when they have the aux cord, and crave some emotional density in their music.

This is an album meant to be listened to as a story. It’s a very deep and relatable story too. I have been in a similar situation as well as many other people, and while the songs themselves are simple, you can still feel the emotion that he feels with each song and feel his personal stages of grief.

All the lyrics are honest and amazing, but the chorus is the best: sad and uplifting at the same time, curing your depression-type of feel.

Full of sentimentality, ~how i’m feeling~ emits the perspective of looking at the bright side despite the confusing sensitivity we all possess. As for Lauv, he stays true to his artistry which makes this album even more distinctive.

  • Thomas Bleach

From start to finish, ‘How I’m Feeling’ is a deep dive into the mind and emotions of Lauv. It’s all about the art of understanding and the art of embracing your emotions with an open heart. While it is a long record, it doesn’t really matter as this is unapologetically for his fans. This is a record that encourages them to immerse themselves within and continually learn more about him and themselves.

“How I’m Feeling” rarely, if ever, offers lyrical genius and is mostly derivative. The lyrics are forgettable and provide no imagery. He’s more of a Camila Cabello than Taylor Swift, to put it kindly.

~How i’m feeling~” is an album worthwhile and creates storytelling that goes in-depth into his own emotions, allowing viewers to get more of an insight of who he is and who he desires to be. With songs with upbeat tempos filled with hope, he shows the strength hidden within defining true emotions.
