  • Taste of Country

George Strait is steady like a river, and his new album Honky Tonk Time Machine shows just how true that platitude is.

  • Sounds like Nashville

Honky Tonk Time Machine is another solid-gold reminder that George Strait is the kind of leader we desire, but likely don't deserve.

  • All Music

Strait sings with humor, tenderness, and ease, qualities that lend the deliberately nostalgic Honky Tonk Time Machine grace, resonance, and depth. Perhaps this isn't a new trick for Strait, but it's one to be cherished nonetheless.

  • Saving Country Music

you still get everything you want out of a George Strait record in Honky Tonk Time Machine, from some great mid tempo stuff that’s perfect for Saturday night, along with few serious tear jerkers, to the point where you don’t feel uncomfortable telling people you believe this might be one of Strait’s better efforts in the latter half of his career.

  • Country Universe

George Strait’s 30th studio album is appropriately titled, as its fiddle and steel saturation does sadly feel like something from a long gone time and place. Strait’s latest album is a welcome return of both an artist and a sound that strengthen country music with their presence.

  • Rough Stock

At a time when too many country albums are spoiled by sonic experiments that mess up otherwise fine projects, it’s such a delight to find an album this good, from start to finish. George Strait’s album is no ride in any clunky old sci-fi time machine; it was created in real time, instead. So, whatever sort of machine you want to call it, let’s hope and pray Strait keeps it rolling forward for a long, long time.

To borrow one of his time-honoured titles, this is Strait singing somewhere beyond the blue neon, taking in the clean air of country tradition that has been his life and breath for so long.

  • Country Exclusive

it’s another solid record from King George. It’s not earth-shattering, but that isn’t George strait. This album is what Strait does best, a solid collection of songs rife with fiddle and steel and piano and boasting smart, substantive lyrics. Strait is probably never going to release the Country exclusive album of the Year, but he’s also never given us a bad record in nearly forty years, and that’s truly a thing to behold. Another slice of solid, straight-up country music from one of the genre’s most special artists.

The 13 songs are uniformly strong from start to finish. That includes a cover of Johnny Paycheck's 1986 single "Old Violin" with Strait putting his vocals into higher gear. The only questionable song is "Codigo," not for the song itself, but Strait invests in a company producing the tequila. As a song, the single is a keeper in an album filled with them.
