Hoist is an amazing album that really gave off a great side of Phish. And I've listened to the album tens of times, and the album still amazes me, and keeps me listening. And in a way, that is what makes a classic album.

All Music
Hoist is the most concise Phish album to date, but that's not necessarily a compliment. Phish's strength is not songcraft or hooks, it's the band's love of free-form song structures and extended jams. When the group's sound is reduced to its core, as it is on Hoist, it isn't quite as compelling. Nevertheless, the album is an improvement on the dismal Rift and features several fine cuts.

Hoist has an overall sense of clunkiness and doesn't have the best flow if you listen to it in one go. As for individual tracks, there are some definite keepers that I found catchy and extremely memorable They would of course be added to the vast Phish live repertoire. Mediocre? A bit. But I still suggest that it deserves at least a try, no matter if you are a 'phan' or a prog-enthusiast or simply a fan of rock.

No, this isn't quite as Phish albums have been in the past, but if you enjoy the band's music, this one is a must! Give it a chance — I'll bet it grows on you!
