There's also the romantic "I'll Never Not Love You" and the heartfelt tribute to his mom, "Mother," all songs that (like his 2005 hit "Home") add a bit of earnest warmth to the album's overall buoyant, swinging feeling -- one that Bublé has made his own.

The handful of new songs are less memorable. I’ll Never Not Love You might make a traffic jam more bearable on Radio 2 but you’ll be humming something else by the time you get home. The title track is fun, however, a collaboration with A-list songwriter Ryan Tedder that features grand piano stabs and a notable increase in energy from the singer.

Overall, in an album that was supposed to be about Bublé branching out, he for the most part failed to do so. While his voice itself is never the issue, most people would need to skip through the album to find a song that they want to listen to on repeat. He should continue to try and bring in different types of songs, but should do it in a way that is unique to him.

‘Higher’ is a solid album from Bublé that plays to his strengths and will thrill his fans. Sniffy critics will cry ‘same old, same old’ but Bublé knows what he’s good at, and he’s a master when it comes to his vocals. ‘Higher’ has plenty of potential to return Bublé to his commercial peak and quite honestly, it’s just nice to listen to an album that feels familiar with the warm tone of Bublé’s voice throughout. There’s no one like him in music these days and he’s one of the world’s greatest singers.

Of course, you could say that the Canadian has done no different than he has done for the last twenty-odd years but it’s a formula that has turned the singer into an icon across the world and, let’s face it, when your work is popular enough to be premiered from outer space, you could say that it is a formula that has, is and, probably for the rest of his career, worked pretty well for him.
