Hi This is Flume

Hi This Is Flume is a mixtape by Australian electronic musician Flume. It was released on 20 March 2019 by Future Classic. The mixtape is Flume's latest release since Skin: The Remixes in 2017. Hi This Is Flume was announced on 19 March 2019, only days after Flume's documentary When Everything Was New was released to YouTube. Flume began working on the album away from the public eye from 2017, following his commercially successful album Skin and its world tour.

The mixtape is a more experimental record compared to Flume's previous work, and contains features from several of his favorite artists such as SlowthaiJPEGMafia and frequent collaborator Kučka, as well as guest production from HWLS, Sophie and Eprom. A remix of Sophie's "Is It Cold in the Water?" from her 2018 album Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides by Flume and Eprom is also included. An accompanying visual for the mixtape directed by Jonathan Zawada, who had also designed the artwork for Flume's album Skin, was released and premiered on YouTube on release day. The mixtape was released to positive reviews, with music critics complimenting its experimental style.

The mixtape was nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, becoming Flume's second nomination for the category and third overall.-Wikipedia

The most vivid takeaway from Hi This Is Flume is how he breaks apart his now-familiar sound, zooming in on the different layers and looking at them in new ways. He has taken his music a long way from the safety of the cereal box. It will be fascinating to see how far he is willing to push it.

In a way, Hi This Is Flume seems like the anti-streaming album. It makes less sense to pick out certain tracks than to ride the mixtape's hairpin turns and whiplash stop-starts. Coming from an artist who struck oil by digging firmly in the middle ground, Hi This Is Flume is a welcome step towards somewhere less comfortable.

Make no mistake, Hi This Is Flume is a great listen, but outside of the aforementioned rap collaborations, the mixtape struggles to feel especially fresh. Specifically, many of the beats Flume crafts here feel akin to the work being done by PC Music and SOPHIE. Of course, this comparison is encouraged by the actual presence of SOPHIE on this tape.

There is no doubt that the album is work of art, with the beautiful and abstract designs on the cover complementing the aesthetic quality of the music itself. However, while the mixtape is impressive in its experimentalism, the absence of any mainstream tracks, in addition to tracks which at times can feel chaotic and messy, make it much less captivating and harder to listen to than other albums.

Hi This Is Flume is essentially a contemplated and classy publicity stunt. However, the mixtape does not include one track which is guaranteed to be a mainstream hit like “Never Be Like You” or “Say It” on Skin. We know Flume is more than capable of whipping these up, and I think it was brave and honourable that he focused on the experimental side of things, not ensuring mainstream success.
