Critic Reviews
Show All-
Pitchfork
Pop rarely sounds as transformative and as transfixing as it does here.
-
The Quietus
Heaven Or Las Vegas sees the realisation of the Cocteau's years of nebulous experimentation realised into a full-blown collection of direct yet still mysterious pop songs.
-
Sputnik Music
Clear and fragile, with something of a rather difficult to describe "slant" to it.
-
Treble Zine
Heaven Or Las Vegas is ultimately a fire of joy, a well-tended fury of sounds and shapes that make drowning preferable to the sound ever going away.
-
All Music
From the start, Heaven . . . is simply fantastic.
-
Audiophile Review
Cocteau Twins are one of those groups with a 100-percent distinctive sound so the songs tend to blur and blend in with one another. That said, playing Heaven or Las Vegas again after all these years, I smiled when "Iceblink Luck" came on, like a familiar friend you hadn't heard from in ages.
-
Post Punk
It marks a latter-day peak in the band’s career as well as a dividing line, propelling the band further into alternative subconscious and employing both the catchiest set of tunes and the most intelligible lyrics Elizabeth Fraser would sing to date, mainly inspired by the birth of daughter Lucy Belle.
-
Exclaim!
Heaven or Las Vegas was both a triumphant and watershed moment for the band.
-
Clash Music
When faced with a record as gloriously opulent as ‘Heaven or Las Vegas’, picking favourites is a fool’s endeavour.
-
Only Solitaire
My heart, in this particular case at least, lies fully with the risk and adventure, but that does not mean I would like to downgrade the quality of the material here. And how can you downgrade an album that begins with such a God-like song as 'Cherry Coloured Funk'?
-
Consequence of Sound
The album doesn’t overwhelm with an excess of layers. Instead, individual sounds (especially Robin Guthrie’s guitar textures) were labored over with painterly care, which resulted in the most vivid music Cocteau Twins would ever produce.
-
Derek's Music Blog
This was, to me, one of the finest albums in the Cocteau Twins career.
-
Nooga Today
Dreamy pop refinement.
-
Adrian's Album Reviews
[This is] music that is difficult to imagine even when you're blissfully happy and in love, yet here it is, existing in the world of reality.
-
The Skinny
Heaven or Las Vegas is, quite simply, a magnificent album.
-
Eric Roosendaal
On Heaven Or Las Vegas you feel that all the things the Cocteau Twins were looking for over the years finally came together.
-
Mecca Lecca
The saturated colors of the heavens are intoxicating.
-
Chicago Tribune
THE COCTEAU TWINS MAKE INCOHERENCE SIMPLY MESMERIZING.
-
Album Chats
Heaven or Las Vegas, the group’s blend of jangly, fluttering atmospherics with frontman Elizabeth Fraser’s soaring soprano truly captured the burgeoning dream pop sound.
