Pitchfork
With lush instrumentation and some welcome guest appearances, the follow-up to the UK singer’s breakout debut highlights her sumptuous voice and attention to detail.

The Young Folks
To have your heart on your sleeve is to be vulnerable and honest, a practice we could all benefit from. Just in time for the summer season, Ella Mai’s Heart On My Sleeve delivers excellent R&B anthems for those recovering from heartbreak and the hopeless romantics alike.

Clash Magazine
Admittedly the aural range she executes on the project isn’t massive but it does prove to make a cohesive second album and what she does present shows an incredibly polished sound that doesn’t disappoint after such a monumental first album.
-
The Guardian
The happy 90s nostalgia of the British singer-songwriter’s debut yields to the tricksy rhythms and odd magic of her follow-up.

Ratings Game Music
Ella Mai is one of the few artists that proudly doesn’t step too far out of her comfort zone. See, when a rapper does that (ie DaBaby), people complain; but when an R&B artist does that, it’s actually appropriate. With that being said, while listening to Heart On My Sleeve, you will get constant body blows from ultra-smooth melodies and both toxic and nontoxic relationship-related lyrics. I feel like you have to be a true R&B head to really appreciate this album. Like, I don’t think you can listen to this album leisurely.

Four years later, the singer proves she's retained the optimism of her doe-eyed debut.

ELLA MAI MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN WITH SOPHOMORE ALBUM ‘HEART ON MY SLEEVE’.

AllMusic
The lack of variance in tempo across the hour-long sequence makes Heart on My Sleeve downright torpid at points. All upticks are welcome -- the one with an incongruous Kirk Franklin appearance included -- but slow and low is undeniably the singer's forte.
