  • Louder

ZZ Top leader Billy F Gibbons' dirty third album Hardware proves he’s getting the hang of this solo lark.

Hardware is an absolute gem of an album; more ‘straightforward’ than its two predecessors, perhaps more immediate for ZZ Top fans, but absolutely, instantly recognisable as Billy F Gibbons. The whole album sounds like a band recording ‘the old way’, just jamming it out and grooving together in the studio. There aren’t many players with such a signature sound and style; get it while it’s hot - this is one of the legends of blues-rock at the absolute top of their game.

There aren’t many surprises on Hardware, but with Gibbons now pushing into his mid-70s, should we expect any? He sells everything with his committed performance and sounds like he’s having a blast. At this late stage in his career, we shouldn’t ask for, or expect, more.

Gibbons brings this album as a gift for fans and new listeners willing to embark on a journey of blues-rock and many other genres that makes this album difficult to place in a single category. Hardware showcases all of Gibbons’s best musical talents and highlights his legendary rough voice.

  • Uncut

For all Gibbons’ often intriguing meandering from his usual path, on Hardware and elsewhere in his solo career, there remains little doubt about what he does best.

‘Hardware’ isn’t a definitive statement of Gibbons oeuvre, but it’s close enough for the blues.

Still, what makes Hardware cook are the very elements that always work for Gibbons: deceptively sharp songwriting that supports full-throttle rockers and soulful, slow(er) grooves. It's a formula that's yielded great results for Gibbons throughout the years, and they do once again here.

This is good time, beer drinking music for sweaty bars in the summer heat and has no interest in posing and pretence.
