Happy People embraces an ecstatic brand of cheerfulness so far removed from the realities of everyday life that it creates a kind of altered state.

Where Happy People only exercises Kelly's technique, U Saved Me adds some heart.

This is one collection of songs that really is for diehard fans only. Anyone else should steer clear.

R Kelly's work can lean to the smooth and superficial side, but listen to any of the tunes on Happy People in a club or bar and you'll be convinced it's an old one you used to love. Which is no bad thing in itself.

Happy People/U Saved Me stands as one of Kelly's strongest and most consistent albums with no real flaws to find.

Kelly may be down, but he's not out yet.

popMATTERS
The first disc finds Kelly honing his already well developed skills at creating effortless dance hooks, but on the second disc Kelly seems to be trapped in staid evangelical idioms and drowning in itchy church choir robes.

ALL MUSIC
A definitive work of sorts since he's at the top of his game as both a craftsman and conman.

R. Kelly’s double disc Happy People/U Saved Me displays two attitudes whose co-existence sometimes seems unbelievable. The first disc is a laid back R&B journey to Kelly’s idea of a good time, “Fancy cars/movie stars.” The second uses a Gospel tone to deal with ideas of salvation.

Both Happy People and U Saved Me reveal the naughty-by-nature star aiming higher than his groin with uplifting messages that’ll take you from Saturday night partying to Sunday morning praising.
