Garth Brooks’ Enthusiasm Cannot Save Flat ‘Gunslinger’ Material
-
Wide Open Country
Gunslinger is a see-saw affair. He delivers everything with enthusiasm, but some material just falls too flat to save. And yet, some songs deserve “repeat” status.

Sounds Like Nashville
I think it’s evident that Garth has got his groove back. I think any of these tracks could work on The Chase, In Pieces, or Sevens, three of his finest albums of the 1990s, while also giving him a strong chance at picking up some more steam at radio to add to his already impressive résumé.

Los Angeles Times
It's a disappointingly ordinary effort that for the most part merely does what modern Nashville product is supposed to do.
-
Sputnik
The good songs are really, really good, but everything else is unfortunately forgettable and bland. Garth is a great artist who can do much better than putting out an ok album with a couple good songs.
-
Pop Matters
While perhaps not quite to the level of his classic early albums, Gunslinger is a welcome and, perhaps most importantly, fun return to form from one of the 20th century biggest musical icons. 7/10

All Music
Gunslinger doesn't sound like pandering to the past but rather a cheerful acceptance of the present.
-
Country Standard Time
For all the criticism mounted against Brooks over the years for being too slick and too commercial, he is at his best when he lives up the name and cover of "Gunslinger."
-
Renowned For Sound
Ultimately, Gunslinger is a good, if underwhelming, album from an artist who is clearly capable of more.
-
Herald Standard
“Gunslinger” continues Brooks’ knack for working a room and winning friends in both low and high places.

Your Life In A Song
There is just enough to suggest that his best days are not behind him, but you will look in vain for any consistency.
-
The Music Universe
Overall, the album rocks and is one of his best yet! The country instrumentation with organs, fiddle, acoustic guitar and its storytelling lyrics give it a throwback to the Nineties.
-
Born Country
While I can’t say that I feel it met my own “Garth standards,” I can say that I don’t feel like he let me down. Not necessarily everything “fits,” in my opinion, but by no means is this a bad collection of songs.

I'm glad to see that this Oklahoma gunslinger has a few more bullets in his gunbelt.
