The sheer strength and breadth of Mary J. Blige’s voice is like comfort food. Her 14th studio album mixes soaring, soulful affirmations with some confusing collaborations.

On the whole, the album was really disappointing. It wasn’t the worst album in the world, but it may have just become one of the worst albums in Mary J. Bilge’s discography.

Good Morning Gorgeous had me nervous there for a second – I worried this was going to be a quick cash-in to capitalize off MJB’s Super Bowl halftime notoriety. Despite a pretty rocky start, we eventually get to the MJB we know and love.

It’s an album full of emotional tumult as well as joy and optimism.

As a lyricist, Blige's gift has never really been specificity so much as sincerity, and the songwriting on Gorgeous circles subjects so familiar they've worn in like grooves on vinyl: hope, heartache, learning to love and let go. But that experience lives comfortably in her voice — now settled into a deeper, raspier register — and in the freedom that comes from no longer holding prime valuation in the pop marketplace. There's a lean-in intimacy to the production too, which seesaws between feathery new-jack shuffles and a kind of soulful syncopated simmer that wouldn't sound wrong on an old jukebox.

Let's face it: there is little that Mary hasn't accomplished since her 1991 debut, What's The 411, and consequently, there's little left for Her Highness to prove. But that doesn't mean that Good Morning Gorgeous isn't a worthy set, or that Ms. Blige has stopped being a complex and compelling artist. So pour a glass, cop it, get and immerse yourself in the tracks that speak to you the most. Isn't that what you deserve......Gorgeous? Highly Recommended.

A record that exudes charm and grace, ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’ revels in the stature of Mary J Blige, while also presenting exhilarating new ingredients. Potent R&B worthy of the much-hyped newgen, this record illustrates that sometimes the originals remain the greatest.

After 30 years as the Queen of hip-hop/soul, the Yonkers legend has gone back to her roots for an inspiring 15th album.

All the self-doubt, romantic aggravation, and self-healing might seem overdone in a catalog chock-full of it across three decades. Few have covered the subjects with such detail and conviction as Blige, and the bottom line is that this 14th proper album of hers combines nuanced performances and succinct writing like none other.

Her voice flows like lava, making the expensive production work around it.

The Queen of Hip-hop Soul has returned. “Good Morning Gorgeous” is one of MJB’s most profound albums yet. It bolsters questions of self-love while emphasizing the overcoming of hardship. The next time that you feel lonely or seek a push towards being your true self, press play on “Good Morning Gorgeous”. Preferably with a steaming cup of coffee the moment you wake. Wish yourself an amazing day. You are complete.
