Good Man is an indication that he can still deliver real gems when he puts his mind to it.

Ne-Yo Can’t Solve the Mid-Career R&B Riddle On ‘Good Man’. The R&B vet built his career on his subtle musical sensibility but on his seventh LP he stumbles trying to keep up with the times.

If you’re a Day One Ne-Yo fan, you’ll find Good Man is a solid listen filled with great songs from top to bottom – it’s just that middle section that’s in need of a trim. The reggae-tinged “Push Back,” the midtempo effort “Hotbox,” the well-written but unmemorable “Back Chapters,” they all just get lost in the shuffle. But give Ne-Yo props for keeping his word. This is the sound y’all have been missing.

Lets keep it all the way real: Popular R&B music is becoming more and more of a lost art. It has become a sound that is outdated, which is why I think this album feels a bit off. From time to time, it is enjoyable enough to look past, but way too often, it bugs me. With that being said, I can see this album getting some major plays in the next couple of days, but as for long-term play-ability — I don’t see it lasting long.

I have say this is a nice album, as it’s not too different from what I would expect from Ne-Yo. However, I do think there are a few tracks that could have been left off during the final cut. It’s like classic Ne-Yo … but also not.

He largely persists with his tried-and-true songwriting approach, detailing various scenes from a monogamous relationship while saving room for a few moments with low-key, high-class celebrations in mind. Not one song is poor, but few stand out.

The album is saturated with way too much overproduction and is over compensated with 20 songs which really could have been refined. He has the potential and the talent to continue to impress but his execution just seems to be completely off. it’s a shame really.

“I feel like we’re right on time with this album because, you know, with sexual harassment case[s] here and rape charge[s] there, I feel like it is time for us as men to be reminded what it is that we’re supposed to do in regard to these women and how we’re supposed to respect them and treat them.”
