Whether through his raspy, slightly-behind-the-beat cadence, the ancient twang of his battle-scarred guitar sidekick Trigger or reverence for the genre that he arguably helped shepherd through the latter half of the 20th century and into the new millennium, Nelson is the consummate country artist.

As ever, it’s all played with impeccably economical style, tight-as-a-drum country shuffles with occasional jazz excursions; the work of a bona fide legend who’s never sounded more alive.

In truth, God’ s Problem Child could be seen as a reflection on a life well spent (“You had your run and it’s been a good one” he sings on the otherwise weary “Old Timer”), but with plenty of frayed edges to ruminate on as well.

Willie is in surprisingly strong voice given his age and hectic schedule. Combined with the excellent songs included, this is a really good album by a living legend who is still at (or at least not far off) the height of his powers.
