The R&B star’s music sounds like the work of an artist who’s been sure of where he’s going for a long time.

The biggest thing for Giveon on Give Or Take is how he struggles with control in the realm of love. Giving control ends with him stumbling into something he’s not ready for while taking control results in him not receiving a fair chance to find someone to truly call his own for the long haul as his past pains arrive to interrupt that process. Giveon is still trying to find his balance in love, but it would certainly help him a whole lot if he let go of his old baggage to rediscover his footing and make some progress on his journey.

The growth both mentally, emotionally, and vocally create for a truly captivating listen that’ll leave you with either tears streaming down your face or some sense of closure — whichever you prefer. In the beauty of his pain, we get to grovel alongside in the product of intimacy, growth, and devotion. I could only put whole numbers in the original review, though it sat low eights. I can say after a few listens, it has gone up a good amount, very close to low nines, though most comfortably in the high eights.

Giveon’s “Give or Take” album is his most unafraid and truthful collection of songs, and, for that, his devout fans should be grateful. Despite it’s various challenges, “Give or Take” is worth a listen as it is sonically compelling and relatable to both content observers and even the most heartbroken of love-fools.

  • AllMusic

Giveon's rich and graceful voice remains so distinct that he could get away with singing nonsense. Despite the involvement of roughly two dozen production partners, the set is cohesive, almost to a fault, and most stimulating when it's slightly vaporous yet bristly, with a foundation in low-end thrum.

  • Music Matters Media

Giveon’s two 2020 EPs – which were created by a way smaller team than the over two-dozen producers who contributed to Give or Take – showed an artist far more interested in pushing the boundaries of his sound. Give or Take, then, is the sound of an artist without a career-defining solo hit or a masterpiece project, prematurely resting on their laurels.

  • Pitchfork

Giveon’s debut album seeks to scale the highs and lows of love and heartbreak, but more often sounds like he’s cruising on autopilot in the center lane.
