  • Pitchfork

The Miami duo’s new album builds on the strengths of their recent mixtape with speaker-rattling songs about pleasure, power, and strong women unapologetically getting their own way.

  • The Fader

The rappers bring their own personality to the classic structure.

  • Revolt

While they have some refining to do to ensure that this style doesn't run dry, Girl Code establishes a corner of rap for City Girls that similar artists are unable to box themselves into.

And really, that’s what their style actually boils down to. Knowing their goals and doing whatever it takes to achieve them.

  • The New Yorker

Finds the pair sanding down their more raucous edges, rapping over subdued beats that mirror the drowsier, more hypnotic sound that has infiltrated the charts in the past several years. But this doesn’t result in a neutered album; the pair’s voices still stand out.

  • Stereogum

Balances the nasty, mercenary sex-raps that made City Girls famous with more introspective stuff. The album absolutely explodes with attitude and charisma, and both Kiki and J.T. sound tough as hell over its minimal, propulsive beats.

  • Spectrum Culture

Quick, easy definitions don’t fully convey their talent or the importance of the rules they set. Sure, they set them “overnight,” but when Drake, Cardi B, and da baddest bitch herself, Trina, cosign you, you get away with almost anything you want.

It is the energy behind both them and the instrumental that catches my attention the most.

  • Consequence of Sound

It’s probably safe to say that’s where a lot of City Girls’ fierce attitude comes from in these cuts, especially “Twerk” and “Clout Chasin'”.

  • Vibe

The lead single "Twerk" is tweaked on the album to include a verse from their Quality Control sister Cardi B while Jacquees and Lil Baby also deliver guest verses.

  • Hip-Hop Vibe

City Girls brought that raw Miami sound on Girl Code and added to the large amount of success that Quality Control Music has seen this year.

  • WSOE

Deliver a bold, nasty set of tracks that balance some more self-reflective cuts with the brassy raps for which the pair is best known.

  • Hip Hop N More

This collaboration makes perfect sense since both artists are known for their ratchet stuff. City Girls are also signed to Quality Control Music, a label Cardi has close ties with.

  • King Alers

It reminded me of when I used to listen to Gucci in high-school, it was very rough and not perfect and that made it perfect in itself. Their rap style is very unique to other women rappers but they still know how to captivate and make a hit as well.

Overall Girl Code is fun but it’s not as fun as it could be. I give Girl Code 6 Blonde Lace Front Wigs out of 10.

One of the most provocative female hip-hop duo in years, the Miami duo of JT and Yung Miami are the next generation of female speak out as raw and confident — and with as much swagger as the boys.
