On her second album, the country-pop singer remains a powerhouse talent who can sing the hell of out every middle-of-the-road style going.

The songs on Maren Morris’s new album, “Girl,” move away from the disarmingly detailed tracks on her major label debut, “Hero.”

After a lauded debut album and a dance hit, Morris seemed poised to go mainstream, but her follow-up to Hero is unconvincing.

Maren Morris' Girl album is not short on ambition. The "Girl" singer challenges her fans, her critics and most importantly herself across a 14-song collection that's best described as exclusive.

GIRL sometimes glows with the contented glimmer that made Golden Hour such a delight. Morris is on her own wavelength, though, one a little closer to the country mainstream.

Even if the rest of the world happily receives her, country radio shouldn’t be so cavalier about letting its star divas get away.

The kind of grit she displays on this record is the sort that has gotten women in country a lot of attention for generations. This album is a test to see what a woman with some power in country music can do; we’re all watching with great anticipation to see what the outcome is.

  • Saving Country Music

Music and artists that are unwilling to dignify the country genre with even a shred of appreciation or homage to the roots—while at the same time exploiting country music’s opportunities to be heard by the masses for their own personal gain—should never be allowed to reside within country music’s borders unchecked.

Girl is the perfect follow-up to Hero. It builds on that album’s foundations and sees Morris very much forging her own path.

One of the best sophomore albums I have ever listened to, it is evident that this work has been a labour of love with strong intentions. I cannot recommend listening to ‘GIRL’ enough. It is a truly enjoyable sonic experience.

Where 2016’s Hero introduced Morris to the world with standout first single “My Church,” heartfelt Billboard Country Airplay No. 1 “I Could Use a Love Song” and feel-good bop “Rich,” 2019’s Girl steps it up a notch.

GIRL shows Morris occupying a more outwardly confident space than we’ve seen her in before, but she does while using the recognition of both her own flaws and the flaws within her relationship as a safety net.

I applaud her for her bravery in not sticking within genre confines and if it means she runs the risk of alienating some fans, then so be it – Morris has made a fun, interesting and deeply personal album that has more to say and lots more interest than ‘Golden Hour’ ever had. And that won a Grammy.
