Slant Magazine
John Legend needs to drive toward an original angle on the genre before he truly earns his moniker, but, in the meantime, Get Lifted is a satisfying mixtape for the journey there.
-
Sputnik Music
Awe-some soul vocals, occasionally drawling albeit simplistic piano playing, and poppy/rap-ish structures, Get Lifted stands as a great opus for John Legend.

PopMatters
The best of Get Lifted is proof that is something that may not change as quickly as we think.

The only misstep—and it breaks my heart that such juvenile lyrical spew made this masterful record’s final cut—is West’s track-debasing rap on the otherwise stellar “Number One,” during which he (I’m not kidding) has a conversation with his penis. But with Legend’s subtly beautiful piano and soulful vocals breathing life into these soon-to-be standards, you’ll forgive this one cringe-worthy blunder.

R&B is back, thanks to a stunning record from a new legend.

Tiny Mixtapes
In short, there is no justification for this album's existence on a major label. There is nothing John Legend does that isn't being done better by dozens of artists whose only failing is that Kanye doesn't know about them.

Get Lifted is an album that not only lived up to the hype, but rose squarely above it. Yes, at times it is a patchwork of the past filtered through Legend’s ever-present influences, but the quality of his writing and performance, and his collaborators’ contributions, make it worthy of the awards and plaudits it rightly received.

Legend just knows his stuff.
