FUTURE PAST offers the listener a taste of the past while maintaining modern competence (just as the name describes). Previous recent albums by Duran Duran, such as Paper Gods, pale in comparison to this magnum opus of modern new-wave. If you have ever even had a passing interest in this genre of music, I strongly recommend you listen to it, as nothing beats these experienced masters of the art, effortlessly displaying their capability.

Few things are obvious with the band: There's always something to puzzle through and figure out, whether it's a video, an artistic statement or a lyrical twist. This complexity is a reflection of Duran Duran's punkish art-school roots, sure, but also their dedication to creating pop music that's both commercially accessible and artistically challenging. "Future Past" certainly fits this bill, while emphasizing that can look back fondly at your past self without getting lost in nostalgia.

If it doesn’t go down as a Duran Duran classic, the album will at least be remembered as a solid entry in the equally solid streak that gave us All You Need Is Now and Paper Gods.

Their lyrics may never go beyond flashy escapism, but at least their music can still go in different directions. Other artists from the 80s may have made leaps and bounds from the decade, but Duran have slyly taken their time gliding into each new era. Hell, maybe they took the sailboat from the “Rio” video and just sailed into each new sunrise with ease.

Overall, this is a classy, hook-laden album that delivers a respectful nod to their hey-day past, with more than enough quality & craft that points to a relevant and abiding future for Duran Duran.

The band’s first album since ‘Paper Gods’ in 2015, ‘Future Past’ is the work of a group resurgent. While many of their peers have opted for merch-stalling fillers as they grind out another Greatest Hits tour, Duran Duran have opted to challenge themselves. Frothy, neon-soaked entertainment, ‘Future Past’ – when it works – is a blast of ridiculous 80s themed fun.

Though hardly dour, subtle nuances cast an odd pall over the album not fully realized until the final song’s ending notes.

All in all, I genuinely don’t have anything bad to say about this album. No track is wasted, and I don’t think the record could get any more complete if it tried. Sonically and lyrically, an absolute gem.

All in all, ‘Future Past’ does more than enough to strike the perfect balance between old and new, with an enticing level of collaboration taking place. For the first time in decades, Duran Duran have made a record that you need to hear.

Assured of their legacy and comfortable enough to try to use their music as a force for positivity, this album is a playfully flawed triumph. There are more than enough highs to satisfy both fans and casual admirers, while the lows are not quite low enough to founder the project. On this evidence, Duran Duran still have enough wind left in their pop sails to reach another decade.

Duran Duran are taking some calculated risks here which sometimes means they stumble -- occasionally, the ballads feel a shade strident -- but the restlessness makes for a kinetic, exciting album.

Sure, the hit singles and sold-out shows matter to the band but knowing they have added another worthy work of art to their collection probably matters more. With Future Past, the band have proven yet again that Duran Duran are essential to popular music.

The Future Past, it shines with fearsome pop industry, and whilst we must always enthuse about the new artists coming through, we must also remember, and pay homage, to those that built the road they stride upon, especially when they get it so right.
