Stereogum
In 1993, INXS tried to harden up their sound. It didn't work. This album is their midlife crisis, yielding no hits and marking a sharp decline in sales, not even charting in the top 50 in the U.S.

AllMusic
INXS sounds energetic throughout the album, but the experimentation is poorly executed and there is a serious lack of strong songs and singles, apart from two duets: . . . .

Rarebird's Rock and Roll Rarity Reviews
. . . the 1993 album Full Moon, Dirty Hearts (the band's tenth) was not a wise chance for them to take. It was recorded while the band took time off from touring, and it usually sounds like it was tossed together quickly.

The Oz quintet has a nasty propensity for producing the worst sort of tuneless rock, almost as if it can't quite leave its pub band history behind. So why bother to listen on? Because, in typical INXS fashion, the band transforms itsel f on the latter tracks of the album into an inventive, well-produced, challenging funk/rock ensemble.

The album reached the number three spot in the UK and number four in Australia and became a certified gold album in both countries.
