While Frozen II is even stingier with songs than the slight Frozen, much of what's here leaves a lasting impression with both emotional and musical might. 3.4/5

‘Frozen 2’ soundtrack struggles in shadow of first. The whole album is wonderful, but it has unattainably big snowshoes to fill.

. . . the original songs of Frozen II are epic, hopeful, fun, emotional, and above all, catchy.

Still, there’s a sameness about the songs, in that most are framed as stentorian pronouncements of the character’s current emotional state, one which invariably goes from insecurity and doubt to delusional self-assurance. These songs aren’t clever and, except for Olaf the Snowman’s “When I’m Older,” sung by Josh Gad, they’re not even witty. They’re pretty much the same thing every time, and in the same way.

Based off the soundtrack alone, there are some songs that are worthy follow ups to the original, but none of them top the immediate allure of songs like “Let it Go,” “For the First Time in Forever,” or “Love is an Open Door.” With a more somber score, the instrumental tracks aren’t as invigorating on their own either.

  • THE PAINTED LINES

Let’s be clear. The Frozen II soundtrack is very good. However, it’s not nearly as memorable as the original soundtrack. This album is unquestionably worth a listen. Does this soundtrack make me more or less excited for the film? I’d say an emphatic YES.

The film's greatest flaw is its so-so soundtrack. The songs are mediocre and truly forgettable, despite having been written by the same duo, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

It’s not an exaggeration to say the release of the Frozen 2 soundtrack this past weekend — just ahead of Frozen 2’s November 22 release date — counts as an event. Not since the heyday of Disney’s ’90s animated musicals has a film soundtrack had such high expectations to live up to. So does the new Frozen 2 soundtrack hold up to all that hype? Yeah, pretty much.

Don’t listen to the soundtrack before seeing the film. Not only do the isolated tunes not do justice to their surprising place in the darker, more dangerous narrative showcased in Frozen 2, but if the movie’s release turns out to be anything like what happened last time, you’ll hear these songs plenty over the next year.

The quality of the songs is extremely high – they form a vital part of the narrative, are smartly-written, and without exception are exceptionally catchy. The songs are first-rate, the score is if anything even better than the first film’s – Frozen II is a very fine musical package.

The songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are bangers, naturally, and parents might be glad to discover that the catchiest song on the soundtrack isn’t an Elsa belter, but a pitch-perfect ’80s power ballad sung by Kristoff (ready those karaoke pipes).

Overall, and apart from the shadows of Frozen's first film, this soundtrack album was one of the best. The loss of the catchy side in many tracks is indeed a disappointment. Although replaced with a more mature rhythm, mature with a high intensity level. 4/5
