All Music
Brooks is trying too hard to cover new territory and restore hardcore honky tonk grit to his slick country-rock. When he lets his guard down -- he can still come up with winners, but those moments don't come frequently on Fresh Horses.
-
My Kind of Country
As a whole, Fresh Horses is a solid Brooks album that features some fantastic songs mixed with a lot of filler.
-
Entertainment Weekly
This album is more good fun than great music, but even at its thinnest, Brooks’ inventive risk-taking continues to set him apart from his paint-by-numbers competition.
-
Teen Ink
This album is completely original, combining amazing producing with genius songwriting and flawless singing.
-
Daily Vault
In the end, the best thing about Fresh Horses might be the album's booklet artwork, which features some truly gorgeous Western-themed landscape photography.
-
Tune Freaks
He’s left a definite mark and created an album that is every bit as much fun to listen to in the new millennium as it was the former one.
