Four

Four is the fourth studio album by English-Irish boy band One Direction, released on 17 November 2014 by Columbia Records and Syco Music. Two singles were released from the album, "Steal My Girl" and "Night Changes", both achieving platinum status in the US, and scoring the band their tenth and eleventh UK top-ten hits. The album was also One Direction's last with member Zayn Malik, who announced he was leaving the band on 25 March 2015. - Wikipedia

One Direction extend their winning streak, with echoes of the 1970s and 1980s.

The album’s rock-indebted tracks are such delirious fun that by comparison, the ballads can be a bit of a killjoy.

Over here at Idolator, we thought the album saw the boys “reaching harder for the adult romantic longing of The Killers”.

One Direction's Four is another collection of upbeat pop-rock that will win over UAE fans when the band tours in April.

  • Slant Magazine

The album’s irresistibly obvious choruses, hackneyed sentiments, and puppy-eyed earnestness can come off as endearing when the songwriting is clever enough, but every misstep is, despite the band’s efforts to assert more control over their music, a painful reminder of One Direction’s status as a manufactured, focus-grouped pop entity.

They're growing up not by going wild but — get this — by relaxing. And the result is their best work yet.

  • Pretty Much Amazing

Four is a positive step in that (one) direction, but for the sake of their longevity, they better figure it out before the charms of feigning bashfulness and biting their lower lip wear out.

Luckily on Four the scales are tipped heavily in favor of the kind of songs they do best, with the majority of them sounding like good-time hits that will go a long way toward warming up a cold November night.

Sure, "Four" is nowhere near groundbreaking as it skims the surface of tween feelings. However, it may be the surest album from a boy band since 'NSync's record-setting "No Strings Attached."

The chances of Four changing the mind of someone who has long written off One Direction is likely quite minimal, but if any collection of songs could make a person reconsider their feelings about the boy band that doesn’t dance, this record is certainly it.

The end result is a dull and monotonous album that contains a collection of pop hits by the numbers. What could have been a stepping stone to new heights for the boys is in-fact a step back for them.
