Fantasies & Delusions

Fantasies & Delusions is a studio album featuring the British-Korean pianist Richard Hyung-ki Jooperforming compositions written by the American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, a longtime friend of his. If regarded as a Billy Joel project (Joel composed all the material, although he did not produce Fantasies & Delusions or perform on it), it is Joel's thirteenth and final album, and the only album of his containing classical compositions. Billy Joel's previous album-length project was 1993's River of Dreams. - Wikipedia

Fantasies doesn’t always jell this satisfyingly, but for the most part, Joel doesn’t let his delusions get the best of him.

  • Ultimate Classic Rock

He struggled with playing the compositions to their fullest extent because, as a pop performer, Joel didn’t have the chops to pull it off.

Joel's last effort is a classical throwback that sounds nice but lacks personality.

  • Gramophone

Joo plays all of them sympathetically and is recorded in sound that leaves nothing to be desired.

Fantasies & Delusions, is pretty successful -- it's a nice collection of pleasingly modest, melodic solo piano pieces, mainly sonatas, written by Joel and performed by Richard Joo.

I do not know enough about classical music to comment on the album, other than to say this is an enjoyable collection of songs and demonstrates that Billy is truly gifted.

  • W.L. Swarts Reviews The Universe

The journey of Fantasies & Delusions is not at all unpleasant, but it ends up as somewhat indistinct and nebulous.
