Critic Reviews

Slant Magazine
For a change, Legend doesn’t constantly sound as though he’s trying to impress the VH1 cognoscenti with his impeccable musicality.
-
Soul Tracks
John Legend has managed a few missteps here and there, but Evolver, thanks to his willingness to grow and experiment, is still highly recommended.
-
Los Angeles Times
Legend’s still a most conscientious lover, and his rakish tricks come in the guise of a fine falsetto or piano run. But the urgency of “Evolver” is apparent on “Quickly,” where he implores “The globe is warming, my country’s warring / kiss me — like the world is quaking.”
-
All HipHop
In a matter of four years, John has delivered three solid albums. Even if Evolver is less cohesive due to the integration of the Pop sound to the alternative styles he played around with in Once Again, it still is light years ahead of any artist mimicking his suave persona. Either way, credit should be given where its due; John Legend has definitely been doing things his way.
-
All Music
Evolver is nonetheless a refreshing change of sorts, for all its faults, at least as far as missteps are concerned. Safe, retraced steps from accomplished R&B artists are all too common, and this, if anything, is nothing of the sort.
-
AV Club
Smooth to a fault, Evolver solidifies Legend's standing in the pantheon of good soul singers, but greatness continues to elude him.
-
BBC
Evolver is a colourful burst of soul. Packed with incredible melodies and exquisite arrangements it's yet another step to further confirm Legend as one of the most talented songwriters of the moment.

Gossip On This
Overall, the new John Legend album is a decent effort. John Legend hits the album to a decent side of the field, and everyone should be able to take something from it. This would definitely make a great Christmas gift.

PopMatters
"Evolver" is certainly one of the better R&B albums of 2008, and Legend goes a long way towards proving himself as a jack of all trades.
