Emotions
| Mariah CareyEmotions
Emotions is the second studio album by American singer and songwriter Mariah Carey. It was released on September 17, 1991 by Columbia Records. The album deviated from the formula of Carey's 1990 self-titled debut album, as she had more creative control over the material she produced and recorded. Additionally, Emotions features influences from a range of genres such as gospel, R&B, soul and 1950s, 1960s and 1970s balladry infusion. On the record, Carey worked with a variety of producers and writers, including Walter Afanasieff, the only hold over from her previous effort. Additionally, Carey wrote and produced the album's material with Robert Clivill s and David Cole from C+C Music Factory and Carole King, with whom she wrote one song. --Wikipedia

Slant Magazine
A balance of soul and pop that’s not just technically impressive, but filled with undeniable, honest-to-god feeling.

Rolling Stone
She has a remarkable vocal gift, but to date, unfortunately, her singing has been far more impressive than expressive.

The one emotion that prevails upon completion of the album is definitely a positive one: satisfaction.

Trini Trent
An impressive body of work. Indeed, with her stunning range out in full force and her songwriting telling stories far beyond her years.
-
Pop Rescue
Nestled amongst those ballads were some gems.
-
Soul Bounce
Showed a very talented young woman just on the verge of becoming the megastar that she is now.

Wilson & Alroy's Record Reviews
Mostly the same formula as on her debut, but the dance tracks are better.
-
Verbal Diarrhoea
It just doesn’t have the memorable tracks, mostly bogged down in self-indulgent dribble and turgid ballads.

There is one marvelous song on the album, "If It's Over." Yes, it's gloomy, but unlike the other songs, which are weighed down by sappiness, the lyrics are simple, direct and unsentimental.
