On the Chicago rapper’s second album of the year, she once again displays her uncanny talent to blend the real and the absurd, the cartoon and the corporeal.

den suggests a sense of preeminence; just as Eve was the original woman, cupcakKe herself stands at the front of the pack in the rap game, a self-actualized artist with her own valid claim to originality and primacy.

Eden certainly doesn’t shy away from her unique, occasionally weird filth – one evocative sex rap has the chorus “Finger me like a typo” – but, like January’s Ephorize, she does much more: she drops monster boasts (“PetSmart”), takes aim at deadbeat dads and abusers (“Cereal and Water”), examines her feelings about a cheating man (“Dangled”), investigates the etiquette of sending nudes (“Don’t Post Me”) and closes with a banger about autism awareness (“A.U.T.I.S.M.”).

On Eden, a follow up to this year’s Ephorize, CupcakKe refines her lyricism, diversifies her subject matter, and proves why she shouldn’t be dismissed.

While her raps are as fierce as ever, some songs on “Eden” sound like ones we’ve heard before.

Even though it’s one of her weaker releases to date, Eden might be the most important album CupcakKe has made thus far. Her profile has been raised, and she’s well aware of it, figuring out how to stay true to her roots while also not being afraid to branch out. At its best, her confidence and creativity are as fresh as ever. At its worst, it’s still worth deconstructing and discussing.

  • Highsnobiety

Though to discuss Eden purely in terms of sex would do the album a disservice. After cupcakKe started to fully crystallize her vision on Ephorize back in January, it’s fascinating to see her personal identity come into full focus here. More fierce than ever, she opens the album with “Petsmart,” a song that hits out at the haters who attack her with “all bark, no bite.” The next track widens her aim even further, swapping out the “fake bitches” on songs like “Quiz” to hit broader targets like inequality and sexual assault on “Cereal and Water.”

If cupcakKe’s consecutively released albums are a staircase to her success, her fourth full-length album, Eden, is a giant step upward.

This album comes one week after the new Vince Staples album and they’ve actually got a lot in common. They’re both concise but stuffed with powerful messages and multi-faceted ideas, and to borrow a sentence from Rodney Carmichael’s NPR review of Vince’s new album that also applies to Eden: “It’s a statement, but it’s also a bop.”

Regardless of what I, or anybody else, could ever say, she is going to continue being CupcakKe, and all there is to do is continue to enjoy and appreciate that. Individuality in artistry can be hard to come by, but she continues to make the case that she may very well be the fucking queen of it.

Cupcakke is only 21 years old, but she has talent beyond her years, and I’m so proud of how far she’s come. Please give Eden a genuine listen. She deserves it.

Although some flows feel stale and most the album feels similar to Euphorize, cupcaKke has continued to grow. On Eden, she proves herself as a hard-working young woman, well worthy of up-and-coming fame.

Her merciless rhymes raw-dog your earholes without apology, but every one of these songs bops hard it doesn’t matter how assaultive her delivery is at times because I’m still having fun.

While her plan was thwarted by some concerned friends and she seems to be happy with releasing even more new music, it's hard to swallow the fact that we almost lost CupcakKe – especially when Eden had just proven that her star is burning at its brightest yet.
