The Pearl Jam leader’s first solo album in over a decade is an amiable, tuneful set with appearances from Stevie Wonder, Ringo Starr, and Elton John.

Overall, the songs on Earthling have plenty of earworm potential, the only major complaint I have is that the whole album goes by very quickly. Eddie Vedder may not be the same man he was 30 years ago, he’s a matured family man, but his baritone voice has evolved and throughout this album you can tell he holds onto his grunge core while maintaining a pop sensibility. As a whole this album is different from his previous solo efforts, at times feeling more like a side project. These songs should be very fun live, look for Eddie Vedder’s mini tour this February in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Seattle, San Diego and L.A..

“Earthling” does not always hit every mark it attempts to, but Vedder at least makes the effort to try new things and experiment, which is more than others may do at this stage of his career. As a reward for his effort, there are truly some gems and special moments tucked away inside.

Earthling is a panoramic listen of all things Eddie Vedder, a showcase of defiance and loss, and above all, of acceptance, forgiveness, and perseverance.

Tasteful, sophisticated, and soulful. Vedder sounds revitalized on what very well may be his most creatively-charged album in years. In this regard, Earthling is a breathtaking record that is a definite highlight among Vedder’s illustrious career. Without a doubt, Earthling is among Vedder’s strongest artistic statements and should excite fans for where he will go next as a solo artist and with Pearl Jam.

As ‘Earthling’ fades out, Vedder’s late, estranged father, Edward Severson Jr., croons “I’ll be on my way”. Vedder discovered the tape a few years ago, and had never before heard his father sing. When he joins his father in harmony, it’s the sound of a man at a hard-won peace: both with the father he longed for, and with his own next act as the wise elder himself.

Earthling finds our man treading water - with aplomb on occasion, admittedly - rather than swimming forward.

Take away the legendary lineup of musicians featured throughout Earthling and you’re left with a powerful rock record that drips with emotional honesty and integrity. The biggest surprise might be the unlikely partnership between Vedder, Klinghoffer and Watt. There’s almost thirty years between the three songwriters and yet their musical camaraderie is evident throughout every track. What’s even more impressive is that both Klinghoffer and Watt grew up idolizing Pearl Jam as kids. But then again, who didn’t?

On a strictly musical basis, Earthling is the most varied project Eddie Vedder has ever released, and it's also his lightest album: there's a palpable joy to his free experiments here that's infectious, even fun.

Earthling' sounds like precisely the kind of album Vedder wished to make. A celebratory, jubilant record. The noise only a bunch of old-hands eager to cast their worries off could have made. This is Vedder and his most loose and carefree, and in many ways, that alone is worth the price of admission for long-time followers. If we British fans get given a solo tour too, these songs will no doubt ignite in a live setting. Here's hoping.

Earthling isn’t Eddie Vedder’s first solo outing, but it’s his first in the fighting spirit of Pearl Jam.

Earthling gives an uplifting sense of the creative energy shared between Eddie Vedder and his keenly empathetic collaborators, distilled into striking, memorable songs, and unified by a fresh, cohesive sound. On this evidence, it’s to be hoped the partnership forges ahead as the day jobs allow.
