Drip or Drown 2 does not further the strides taken on those songs but retreats back toward the center of his sound. And yet it is still the best Gunna solo effort to date, owed primarily to his pronounced understanding of what the average Gunna song does well and how exactly to replicate those same effects.

This album is a big win for Gunna, an even bigger win for executive producers Wheezy and Turbo but a championship win for contemporary rap as a whole that should be appreciated by all.

Everyone knows Gunna created something unique and influential, and although we can forgive him for resting on his laurels for much of the past six months, he's going to have to step up and evolve if he wants his rep to keep up. Migos certainly did it, and I have no doubt that someone as effortlessly creative as Gunna can too.

I predict that “Drip or Drown 2” will be one of those albums hip-hop fans bump for months. Each time you listen to it, I guarantee you will find a new song to like. Matter of fact, the album reminded me a lot of a poor man’s version of “DS2” by Future.

Hell isn’t fire and brimstone, it’s a room with a beige interior where this album plays on a loop at high volume for all eternity.

Gunna continues to impress, as he can slip in and out of verses that are catchy and provide lyricism that are full of luxury but is still witty and straight edge. Overall, “Drip or Drown 2” provides us with a solid piece of work hat is different from his mixtape days with Lil Baby.

Overall, I think this is a respectable release from Gunna. He blends familiar tactics with some strange instrumentation. He’s tightened his bars — becoming more concise and wittier than ever on "Drip or Drown 2."

Drip or Drown 2 is an album that is tenacious in its concept. The literal meaning is portrayed on the cover. The metaphorical meaning lies in the lyrics and subject matter. One must either try hard to get where they want to be or die trying. While this concept of self-interest has problematic implications, it is through Gunna’s story that the listener can begin to sympathize.

When Gunna raps, "You gon' want a surfboard when it come to me and Wheezy wave" on his new album, it isn't an empty boast. The previous 12 months has seen the rap, R&B, and pop worlds latch onto his and his shut collaborators' types, both by mimicking his now-iconic movement, shopping for into his "drip" slang and aesthetic, or granting him a visitor verse.

Drip or Drown 2 is full of songs that are just okay, with a few bright spots at the beginning and end of the album specifically. It might not be the best start to 2019 that Gunna was hoping for, but it’s enough to keep him relevant and have listeners looking forward to a project in the near future.

This album just doesn’t feel the same, and that’s really disappointing as someone who was looking forward to it.

Overall, the new Gunna project, Drip or Drown 2, has more misses than hits. The features, which are sparse, help to spice up the otherwise dry and monotonous album.

  • The Needle Drop

The first leg of Drip or Drown 2 is tolerable thanks to its aquatic aesthetic, but the album quickly devolves into mega-formulaic trap rap devoid of any character.

  • Living Life Fearless

Gunna delivers a solid, albeit generic, modern Atlanta rap record but outside of him being an almost exact copy of Young Thug, I don't get the hype for him.

  • Highsnobiety

Stronger than any of his mixtapes or EPs, Drip or Drown 2 is a promising debut album filled with hints of a talent yet to be fully realized on record.

Drip or Drown 2 highlights Gunna’s mesmerizing and hypnotic bars, however, it lacks the evolution and growth Gunna needed to deem it a contemporary classic.

He makes 48 minutes feel like 48 hours. Three flows, one delivery, and a smorgasbord of generic trap beats expose this album for what it is: a waste of time. None of these 16 songs have single potential.

  • Please Shut Up

Although, the aquatic-like instrumentals on the album all sound a bit too easy, they are the main reason why the album is even worth a listen at all.

Drip Or Drown 2 also highlights Gunna’s shortcomings as an artist as well, especially when absorbed in the context of his already prolific existing catalog. That sinuous, bouncy cadence can begin to sound like a drone, especially since there’s little stylistic variation in the mass machined production over the 16 tracks of the album and its predecessors.

  • The Cornell Daily Sun

Drip or Drown 2 is a staple Gunna album, focusing on soft vocal melodies paired with low-key trap beats. The album has numerous interesting qualities that make it a solid addition to the current wave of hip-hop and feels very authentic to both Gunna and Atlanta rap, with all three features coming from prominent Atlanta stars.

“Drip or Drown 2” is a poor showcase of what Gunna can create as an artist. The project itself severely lacks any creative endeavors and Gunna sticks to a formula that has routinely worked. However, we start to see the weaknesses on “Drip or Drown 2.”

While the album's manufacturing's sturdy sufficient to permit a lesser rapper fall into the background and switch in some palatable temper music, we count on extra from Gunna at this level.

This has some bops, but unlike some of his features, Gunna generally brings very little energy to the table, making parts of it really dull. Also, he should have added more features.
