Pop legend-in-the-making Billie Eilish has frankly put us all to shame on don’t smile at me. Eilish throws her voice effortlessly between gritty and golden while casually providing one of the most powerful debuts we’ve seen in 2017.

Her voice—melancholy, theatrical, and soaring—impresses throughout and bears comparison to Lorde and Lana Del Rey. It’s hard to believe this all comes from a 15-year-old.

Eilish is able to articulate herself in a surprisingly worldly way, considering her age and experience. The sound clearly emphasizes Eilish’s background in chorale and some potential R&B influences. As I listen to this album over and over, the experience only gets more incredible.

. . . dont smile at me mostly showcases an artist who’s able to capture the vulnerability and beauty missing from a lot of mainstream alternative music and present in those indie acts (and Lorde and Lana Del Rey), the type of earnestness that gets you notice and respect from “real” publications . . . .

"Don't Smile At Me" provides all the reasons why Billie could be the next big thing. Full of competent songwriting to the brim, unorthodox pop ideas and a swagger that dances so brilliantly between edgy teenagers and urban outfitters chic that it should actually sound more than once embarrassing or constructed. But it doesn't.

It’s original, honest and just that right amount of quirky. Her maturity is impressive, her vocals are impressive and the storytelling is immaculate. She is a newcomer you need to be aquatinted with because soon you are going to hear her name a lot more.

Eilish’s songwriting is never overly wordy, but makes the most of every word she writes down to affect listeners without saying a lot. It’s the smartest and most concise pop songwriting I’ve heard since Lorde, who also got her start young. I try to be stingy with my 10s and wouldn’t normally give one to an EP but Eilish’s fully realized vision completely shocked me. She deserves it, and here’s to a long career ahead.
