  • NME

The likable Scottish pop don – and social media smash – turns in an album of emotional piano ballads on which his voice has more gravel than a branch of B&Q.

  • The Guardian

Singing dolorous ballads in a style that makes Adele look stoic takes some doing, but Capaldi’s honesty is appealing.

  • The Line of Best Fit

It might be the charming vulnerability that is illustrated through the combination of Capaldi’s stunning lyrics and vocals, or it might simply be the way he is away from the music, but there is something compelling about this album.

  • Ones to Watch

Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent arrives as a deeply human debut, chronicling the scars, downfalls, and rejoicings of the myriad of highs and lows that accompany a life lived. It is the rare sort of album that feels like it could have only been created by someone capable of finding the beauty within those less-than-perfect moments and who understands the import of transforming those moments into utterly captivating song.

  • Independent

It’s not the most adventurous album, sure, but Divinely Uninspired is more about unveiling the rough materials Capaldi has to work with. And as Adele has already proven, that’s essential if you want to carve out a long-term career.

‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ isn’t something anyone should hate. It’s well produced, well played, and for the more part well written, if highly repetitive in its he said/she said subject matter. In fact, its refusal to be disliked is perhaps its most dispiriting, irritating aspect.

  • Louder Than War

Lewis Capaldi has made a record that veers away from the usual pop tropes to make it both a bold, and interesting listen. It is still very accessible, which will please his masses of fans but a few of the edgier tracks keep us guessing what’s to come next from him as an artist.

  • Stereogum

Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent is front-loaded. It’s unadventurous. Individual moments are astounding, but its full tracklist feels much longer than 42 minutes. Trekking to the end is a slog.

  • The Skinny

On his debut album, Lewis Capaldi ditches his jokey online persona to deliver a collection of heartfelt, emotional ballads. Sure, Divinely Uninspired... plays it significantly safe, and the song’s patterns are fairly predictable as pop songs go, but Capaldi has enough charisma, talent and enthusiasm to carry this record.

  • Medium

Given his endearing personality, it is hard to completely discard his musical outputs, no matter how conventional they turned out to be. As this is a debut album from a very young man, mediocrity is still easy to forgive, but he might not be as lucky next time. May he learn to put his potential to better use.

  • Highlight Magazine

His ability to successfully describe a love both found and lost matches that of some of the world’s greatest songwriters from decades past, signalling the beginning of a lengthy, successful career for the musician.

  • Celeb Mix

Really, for a debut record, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent is everything a first effort should be. Lewis Capaldi has delivered the goods.

  • The Musical Hype

All in all, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent is an enjoyable, well-rounded album by Lewis Capaldi. It is ballad heavy, but Capaldi makes the ballads compelling thanks to his colorful vocals. Safe to say, the man is truly blessed. If you made the mistake and haven’t partaken of Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, you’re totally missing out.
