Disco

Disco is the 15th studio album by Australian singer Kylie Minogue, released on 6 November 2020 by Darenote and BMG Rights Management. A departure from her previous country-influenced album Golden (2018), it is influenced by 1970s and 1980s discoalong with modern-day electronic dance music. The lead single from the album, "Say Something", was released on 23 July of the same year and premiered on BBC Radio 2. The second single, "Magic", was released on 24 September while a promotional song, "I Love It", was released a month later, on 23 October. -Wikipedia

Dance floor fillers when dance floors are a distant memory seems a strange thing to offer, but there’s something charmingly freeing in the earnest joyfulness of this record, like the first hints of a rainbow after the clouds have parted.

What this album does well, however, is maintain its distinctive sound and tap into the disco zeitgeist. Kylie, however, takes this sound to a much greater extreme than the likes of Dua Lipa, entering the sanitised realm of day time TV/shopping centre pop (like Katy Perry’s latest album).

A time travelling trip back to the disco-fuelled era of sweat-inducing, up-tempo sugar rushes was all we really needed at this time. And your disco needs Kylie. You just don’t know it yet.

Sadly, Disco is at the end of the day an unnecessary album. Fever is twenty years old but sounds far more interesting, fresh, and fun than anything on this album.

A great return to her heyday, Kylie releases a collection of enjoyable disco-pop, unfortunately marred by two duds.

The sound is largely fresh and pays genuine homage to carefree nights at the disco with gusto, charm and flair, all qualities that Minogue has in spades.

If you need a break from the heaviness of 2020, this is your ticket to another dimension where romance fills the (non-toxic) air and the dance floor is always heaving. Few albums in the history of pop have been as desperately needed as this.

Kylie Minogue knows exactly how to lift the spirits of us pop lovers with this record and the performance. It is not only nostalgia in terms of the disco sound, but also in the sense that it is a proper party album while most of the world can’t really enjoy a night out at the moment because of the pandemic.

What it does do is provide some light, fresh relief in a dark year, a little shot of rescue remedy as we prepare for a lockdown winter. It has all the superficial trademarks of Kylie’s work – dancefloor euphoria, knowing pop references – but without many of the richer details that make them more enduring.

‘DISCO’ was the record that Kylie Minogue needed to make in 2020. It’s a carefree, playful and empowering collection of tracks that doesn’t take life too seriously. And after the wild year that we’ve all had, we deserve something a little playful.

Well, what an incredible collection of anthems, this is surly Kylie’s most accomplished work to date and one which she has written with both experience and memories of her own past, while looking at the world today and injecting the antidote that we all need. It’s been said that Kylie has ‘saved’ 2020 and if you slide into this collection of tunes that last just under an hour, you may be cured yourself.

Although Kylie is for sure in her element with this disco-pop style, unfortunately her album DISCO felt very autotuned, rushed and repetitive. If you are a small dancing child or a big fan of her 80s disco style you will love it! But it is not for everyone and in my eyes isn’t one of her standout Albums.
