In spite of its faults, Digital Vein is infused with an overall calm confidence and artistic coherence that were absent on the self-titled 2008 album capitalizing on Cook’s “American Idol” victory. That mediocre cash-in sold more than a million copies. Had it been as impressive as Digital Vein, Cook might still be a star on the magnitude of Justin Bieber.

Resurfacing with Digital Vein on an independent label after departing from RCA in 2012, American Idol Season Seven winner David Cook doesn't seize this new beginning as an opportunity to redefine his music. As it turns out, when left to his own devices, Cook is very happy to continue to make bombastic arena rock, favoring anthems that play to the rafters and power ballads designed for daylight hours.

David Cook offers a full plate of smooth, well-crafted pop-rock on Digital Vein, the American Idol Season 7 winner’s fourth studio album and his first since This Loud Morning, which reached Billboard Top 10 in 2011.

Digital Vein brought our David back. This is not the David of David Cook. He’s older. He’s a bit more jaded. I. CAN’T. STOP. LISTENING. It’s as if David made his rise commercially, came back to his roots independently, and found himself somewhere in the middle.

David Cook never fails to wear his lyrics on his sleeve and his latest record, Digital Vein proves that sentiment . . . With a clever play on words, Cook’s latest record runs through every emotion and feeling similar to that of a blood vessel passing through every inch of the human body and back to the core of its very existence—the heart.

With the release of his 4th album, Digital Vein, we are blessed with the heart and soul of what makes David [Cook] such a special and singular musician in today’s music scene . . . The songs on this album are heaped with the maturity and professionalism we have come to expect from David. His voice sounds super – always focused and free and yet rich and robust. He values every aspect of the technical process and it shows via the seamless, liberated quality of his vocal delivery. And his articulation is precise, yet nuanced.
