It is a perversely infectious sugar high, rap that fundamentally recalibrates the brain’s reward centers.

Playboi Carti has done it again, and in much the same way as he did it previously.

Nobody appears to be on the fence with Carti and this debut — through a more respectable body of work — is unlikely to win over any naysayers. One fan’s dumpster fire is another fan’s lifetime soundtrack.

  • HIGHSNOBIETY

In the much-derided world of mumble rap, Playboi Carti might just be both the hero it deserves and the one it needs right now.

Die Lit should, at the very least, be respected for doing so much while doing so very little.

The Atlanta rapper continues to defy rap conventions on his surprise sophomore album 'Die Lit,' which takes much more inspiration from punk's beginnings.

Ironically, Carti’s holistic approach has yielded something very specifically his, rather than an centerless collage of ideas; by now, his music feels like a breath of fresh air in an overcrowded field.

This project gets too repetitive too fast. It’s more engaging in certain settings, but overall this project is for the moment.

this approach results in some of the most repetitive music you will ever hear in your life, which means you may have to lower your IQ level just a tad bit to fully enjoy it.

Playboi Carti has come a long way from his Soundcloud days. The likes of MexikoDro and Ethereal are nowhere to be seen, although the latter has hinted at future collaborations to come.

His songs resemble a Vine loop: his verses are compacted into tweet-sized hooks, often condensed further into shocking ad libs, all perfectly chasing their own tails.

The intro to Carti’s album sets the tone to the type of upbeat, and melodic vibe you’re going receive throughout the project.

Thanks to the lack of coherence or variety though, nothing on Die Lit really sticks. It's fun enough but, save for a few keepers, has the lifespan of a mayfly. Rock to it for the summer and forget most of it by September.

it's lackluster performance from start to finish truly puts the nail in the coffin for this one. It is time for something to change.

Die Lit is far from a perfect album, but there are some absolute bangers on it and I love how Carti can create so many emotions and almost hypnotize the listener with such simplicity in his songs.

Die Lit proves Playboi Carti is not just a trendy rapper. You’ll be hearing this album everywhere this summer. If you haven’t already, there is still time to get hip.

The point is, while the album may appear long, it’s actually fully enjoyable, and doesn’t drag on like many other releases in hip-hop as of late.

Where many critics have described the effect as some degree of hypnotic, I’d only go as far as to say it works more than it doesn’t.

Die Lit being just “good” won’t end up doing Carti’s career any justice. It’s a better collection of Carti records than his last project was, but without any real standout records.

In the end, I like to hear something new and fresh. This album has a lot of playback material and with it being another well put together album it is safe to say Carti is a force to be reckoned with in the game.

Using the same phrase every 10 to 20 seconds coupling with the beats made by reused sounds for 19 songs will not be adding anything special to the ‘cloud rap’ scene. Carti’s next album will need a major redesign if he plans to lift his career out of this slump. “Die Lit” will die soon.
