Detours

Detours is the sixth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow, released in February 2008. A return to Crow's forte in roots rock, the album also marks her reunion with Bill Bottrell, who produced her 1993 debut Tuesday Night Music Club and briefly worked on her 1996 album Sheryl Crow. The album sold over 700,000 copies worldwide up to 2010. -Wikipedia

What she's actually provided is something grown-up, intellectual and toe-tapping, showing that after 15 years of solo work, she can still be every bit as vibrant and vital as her debut, Tuesday Night Music Club.

That her connection to Armstrong deepened and expanded upon learning she had breast cancer shortly after they split only deepened and expanded the scope, honesty, and profundity of her work.

Crow hasn't been this free or fine since Sheryl Crow, but there is an emotional directness on Detours that makes this a progression, not a retreat, and with any luck, this album isn't a one-time journey down a side road but rather the touchstone for the next act in her career.

This is a straight highway, a direct route with spot-on political and social commentary, a map to happiness that, for her, now includes an adopted child and no celebrity boyfriends.

Detours is a terrific return to form, largely because Crow has made détente with her ex.

Crow has done a lot of growing up in public, and "Detours" sounds like the fruit of both personal and artistic maturity.

Her sixth album is divided between protest songs and intensely personal affirmations that see her shed her dull, pop skin and get back to the blues-hued country rock of her debut.

Crow chose to walk the middle of the road during the middle of her supposed 'detour'.
