  • The Musical Divide

Don’t get me wrong – this is definitely a slight improvement from Cry Pretty, but it’s also far removed from what she can deliver at her best on albums like Blown Away or Storyteller. And outside of tracks like “She Don’t Know” and “Crazy Angels,” I struggle to find much in the way of highlights this time around. And the part of me that wants to root for Underwood just can’t once again with this album.

  • Country Swag

From catchy anthems (“Crazy Angels”, “Poor Everybody Else”, and title track “Denim & Rhinestones”), to love songs (“Faster”, “Pink Champagne”, “Wanted Woman”), to heartbreak (“Burn”, “Velvet Heartbreak”, “Hate my Heart”), to the kind of story tracks Underwood is known for, (“Ghost Story”, “She Don’t Know”), there is something for everyone on this record. Full of theatrical lyrics from top to bottom and even a bit of rock and roll, it is bound to be the soundtrack of the summer.

These are the moments that give Denim & Rhinestones its character and charm, an unabashed pop spirit that separates it from the rest of Underwood's catalog along with most of the mainstream country of 2022.
