CS Country had the opportunity to listen to the record from start to finish prior to its release, and no lie — it’s the best debut album we’ve heard from any artist. Linking up with the uber-talented producer Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Little Big Town, Brothers Osborne) and co-writing all twelve tracks, each song is unique to Dawson’s sound and the production aligns with it perfectly.

One can easily imagine many of these twelve tracks [on Dark Horse] being played on pop radio. This is a compliment, in one sense, because they feature sharp, contemporary sonic elements. It’s a bit of a downer, though, as we would only know it’s country because it’s labeled as such. Dawson’s voice is special, and one we’d love to hear singing real country one day.

By the third or fourth time these songs are heard, this low-key music gains definition and its melodies, along with its post-genre sheen, are beguiling.
