Danzig Sings Elvis is the curious product of one man's obsession with his favorite artist, and it feels like the musical equivalent of Gus Van Sant's remake of Psycho: too close to the original to be a worthy reinvention, and too flawed in execution to feel like a successful homage, although this will almost certainly remain the only Elvis tribute album to include a sample from Aleister Crowley, at least until Jimmy Page gets around to making one.

Well into his sixties, it’s only fitting that the golden throated crooner should pay homage to one of his greatest influencers from the 50s and 60s by crafting an ‘easily listenable’ tribute album.

Danzig adds a bit of distortion to the guitar and sings in a dark, brooding tone, making it the most Danzig-esque track on the album.

Glenn has made a ‘novelty’ album, though not intentionally, as he sounds like a caricature on this record.

Danzig Sings Elvis is a covers album we didn’t need.

This album presents a more traditional take on Elvis than people might expect. It is a little slower and sadder (it is Danzig after all) and there are distorted guitars, albeit mixed much more quietly than on a Danzig album, but it has more of a stripped-down bar band sound than what Danzig fans may be used to.

His voice also sounds great, especially considering that he’s 64 years old and singing a collection of songs in which the majority was sung by Elvis in his early twenties.

The covers are fairly faithful to the originals, so any Elvis fans who were concerned that he had done Blackacidevil-esque Industrial interpretations can relax. This is all very stripped-back and chilled. Some fans will be into this and some won't. It is a departure from the norm, but that's part of the charm of a project like this.

It’s just a shit show, and it sucks to say that. Because it has no value to say a something with passion is utter rubbish.

The purpose behind the album is unmistakably sincere, but the singer isn’t able to make the songs much his own.

Danzig put his heart and soul into these songs and it shows. And sometimes what we need to hear is an artist performing from the heart.
