Critic Reviews
Show All-
Pitchfork
The L.A. rapper’s latest is comforting if not entirely exciting. It finds Q and host of guests in a good place with nothing to prove.
-
DJ BOOTH
ScHoolboy Q’s CrasH Talk is several things at once: an album by a rapper who showed up to do his job; an album by a man in the throes of success and depression; an album by an artist who is trying to merge these worlds but is unable to find peaceful coexistence. Unfortunately, it suffers from banality.
-
NME
The arrival of this delayed album is a bittersweet relief; it's an introspective record that sees the California rapper explore his emotions and outlook on life.
-
exclaim!
Good news, ScHoolboy Q fans: he's still as menacing, off-kilter and creative as ever, maybe more so. But this time, he makes all those compelling elements easier to dance to.
-
ALL MUSIC
At 40 minutes, this is easily Q's leanest LP. It would be meaner with the removal of the inane Travis Scott collaboration "CHopstix," the uncharacteristic single.
-
HIPHOPDX
There are without doubt a few tracks on this album that could make it to your favorite ScHoolboy playlist but said “few” don’t outweigh the remaining dozen that fall flat on their blank face.
-
PRETTY MUCH AMAZING
Maybe it’s not unexpected: after working so hard for years, he’s made it to the point that he’s “getting praises from Jay (Z),” so he did what many, many musicians eventually do: he went on autopilot.
-

CrasH Talk need not reinvent the wheel to bring you from point A to point B. With a guide like Q, even the occasional detour feels like time well spent.
-
THE YOUNG FOLKS
maybe Schoolboy shouldn’t have taken the safe route on CrasH Talk. And with the album underperforming commercially and critically, one should wonder; is there anything Schoolboy has left to say?
-
the musical hype
ScHoolboy Q has his fair share of moments on his fifth studio album, ‘CrasH Talk,’ but the album comes off a bit disjointed compared to past efforts.
-
Medium
serves up a puzzling blend of stylish trap instrumentals and Q being seemingly asleep at the wheel.
-
QREWCIAL
Schoolboy Q's fifth studio album proves his staying power in hip-hop by showcasing his singularity and his versatility with both lyricism and sounds.
-
HIGH SNOBIETY
CrasH Talk succeeds in showcasing the breadth of ScHoolboy Q’s comfort zone as a rapper; he feels equally at home on the Cardo-produced bangers, which all sound like the hyena anthem of a hip-hop remake of The Lion King, and creeping, mafioso beats that invite him to flex his storytelling chops, like album finale and standout “Attention.”
-
Erie Reader
While it may not be ScHoolboy Q's most focused release, it plays closer to a confident victory lap that showcases the rapper's chameleon-like abilities.
-
Wyatt vs. Music
There were 2 songs I didn’t like off Blank Face LP but that doesn’t make the entire album is bad. CrasH Talk displays ScHoolboy Q at a good place in his life.
-
IOWA STATE DAILY
While “CrasH Talk” doesn’t live up to its predecessor, it does shine a light on Hanley’s new chapter of life. “CrasH Talk” displays Hanley maturing and growing into the role of a father to his 10-year-old daughter.
-
THIRSTKEY
It honestly might be him at his worst, but his worst still isn’t that bad to the point where calling it such doesn’t feel right. I want to say it’s positives outweigh it’s negatives, but it’s a very thin margin.
-
The True Blue Note
While it isn’t able to reach to the heights he soared on with Blank Face and Oxymoron, it still stands on its own as a solid album.
-
MUSIC CONNECTION
this record is unfocused, bland and expendable. Hopefully Q can regain ground next time around.
-
THE WICHITAN.COM
CrasH Talk falls JUST short of being an actual CRASH.
-
UPROXX
While he may not have an overarching theme or thesis he wants to convey just yet, he does know one thing: When he does, it’s going to be authentic and 100% Q.
-
REPEAT
If you’re looking for a Schoolboy album that is thought provoking, you are going into this with the wrong frame of mind.
-
K-UTE Radio
I’m not disappointed with this album. In fact, I actually quite enjoyed it. It is by no means perfect and it has a few tracks that I feel didn’t really need to be included, but mostly it is really good.
-
brooklyn vegan
It’s way too soon to know for sure how it’ll stack up against the rest of Q’s discography in the long run, but there’s already a lot to like about CrasH Talk on early listens and it seems like the kind of album that’ll be worth spending a lot more time with.

mini music critic
SCHOOLBOY Q’S ‘CRASH TALK’ IS A LETDOWN. But it has its moments.
-
Amherst Wire
The front half of the album is undeniably bland and generic. Q delivers nothing new or of substance as “CrasH Talk” grows into feeling uninspired. The beats, lyrics and hooks are all things listeners have heard before, and Q unfortunately never brings anything new to the table. However, Q greatly redeems himself on the back half with some incredible bangers and reflective tracks about his life, shortcomings and achievements.
-
SLOPPY VINYL
This album is solid for Q, it shows how time has changed him to be more conscious of his self and how his choice affects the people around him. It is also good knowing that Q is in a better mental state that he has been in the previous years. If this is the sign that TDE is starting to make its presence felt again they are starting on a good note with this project.
-
THE FACE
On his 5th studio LP, the LA rapper balances street cred with his golf dad lifestyle.
-
eject
Sure this album is worth a listen, and there are plenty of tracks to enjoy, but CrasH Talk is inconsistent in nature with some incredible highs and ugly, incoherent lows.
-
MIC DROP MUSIC
CrasH Talk is wild, it feels like you’re going from drive by’s to coasting down the PCH, with stops for weed in between.
-
Vinyl Me Please
CrasH Talk suffers not from its variety, but the absence of cohesion.
-
TFC
This is a placeholder record, and that’s okay. Q has been through a lot recently. I do expect much more in terms of songwriting and beat selection the next time around.
-
Pursuit of Dopeness
Crash Talk takes listeners through a journey full of emotion and swagger.
-
vibeRANT
It isn’t necessarily bad, just not on the level that it could Have been considering ScHoolboy Q’s obvious talent.
