Critic Reviews
Show All-
Odyssey
2017 - Counterparts is one of Rush's most unique and best releases in their entire catalog.
-
Cygnus-X1
Back to basic, hard edge rock sound from Rush. Typical stellar lyrics and musical performances.
-
Smart Bass Guitar
2014 - Counterparts is as refreshing as it is a solid compilation of songs.
-
All Music
By 1993, alternative rock had arrived in a big way, and surprisingly, Canadian veterans Rush were game, releasing their most honest and organic rock & roll record in over a decade with Counterparts.

The Different Stages Music Project
2009 - definitely worth your time and money if you're not familiar with it. It's the stongest effort by Rush from the 1990s, and unleashes great songwriting with top-notch chops from the beginning to the very last track.
-
Amino
a phenomenal record that showed Rush still had plenty of creativity despite being 15 studio albums into their career
-
Riff Raff
Counterparts is a consistently pleasing listening experience.

John McFerrin Music Reviews
As usual, there are a couple of great songs, and as usual they're placed near the beginning. "Animate" showcases everything good about the album's sound and couples it with strong guitar and bass lines and some really good hooks. ... Unfortunately, as usual, the rest of the album is somewhat of a letdown.
-
Mark's Record Reviews
at least it's got a semblance of guts and toughness, along with a bunch of catchy riffs

Saint Louis University
They were back and in our faces in a big way with this album. The keyboards were almost totally gone, the energy and up-front guitar were back, and Neil was exploring new lyrical territory. At its best, this album captured the power and feel of their best albums and the songwriting had come back to life
-
Ultimate Classic Rock
Counterparts finds Rush rising to the challenge with some of their heaviest, darkest and most soul-baring songs, befitting the grunge fashions of the day. Even though the album still divides fans, you have to admire its chutzpah.

I think Rush's longtime fans who were still faithful enough to buy their albums were probably overwhelmingly delighted with this release. This is hardly a great album—even by their standard—but it had been a long time since they sounded this excited! Yay!

Classic Rock Review
But while the material leaned more towards the then-hip alternative rock sound, the album still contained its share of pop oriented and radio-friendly material, and it paid off commercially.

Drews Record Reviews
Let it be said, Counterparts is one of Rush’s finest efforts.
