Copycat Killer serves as the perfect companion piece to one of 2020’s best albums with its poignancy and delicacy highlighted and worn like a badge of honour.

With your anticipated second album dropping during the most significant civil unrest in a generation on the backdrop of a pandemic, it's undoubtedly essential to take some distance and break down these songs anew with fresh eyes. A bittersweet treat to enjoy on these dark, cold nights - ideally in your skeleton onesie.

Though Bridgers makes some changes from Punisher to Copycat Killer, they’re not drastic. The refined strings pair well with Bridger’s vocals, meaning the issue isn’t with the songs themselves but the lack of distinction between the two versions. Copycat Killer is a well-made EP, even if it’s a little too similar to the original.

With Copycat Killer, Phoebe certainly brings us along an amorphous soundscape journey full of lust and longing. If you ever feel like crying, you now know what to listen to (or at least I do).

on Copycat Killer, it becomes a painful synecdoche for the boorishness that runs through almost all of these craftless reworkings.

Bridgers’ EP both evoked an emotional response in me and fit the setting I was in – and this is more than enough to make Copycat Killer a noteworthy standalone release.

  • All Music

Copycat Killer converys a different kind of emotional heaviness than Punisher, and serves as a fantastic counterpoint for the more indie-oriented originals. More than anything, these spare and fantastical readings of Bridgers' songs speak to both the versatility and singularity of her songwriting, which manages to be gripping in whatever form it takes.

  • The Line of Best Fit

These songs are still some of the most charming and psychologically nuanced in indie rock’s recent memory. Like approaching a work of art from multiple angles, there is plenty to be gained from this novel lens on Punisher's fatalistic fairytales.

Copycat Killer is calling out to be played live, in a cathedral, on Halloween, with ambiotic candlelight. We can only hope that one day this happens. Bridgers has received four Grammy nominations for 2021, cementing that the world is floating in the Phoebe-sphere and doesn't appear to be returning to earth any time soon.

  • Cryptic Rock

The title Copycat Killer and its origin is subtly noted in the lyrics of “Punisher” and it truly pays to a solid fact; this EP is a slight copy of its predecessor and these reimagined covers are killer pieces within themselves. That in mind, Phoebe Bridgers continues to innovate and grow as an artist. Creating more layers to peel off, she is revealing more of her true, vulnerable self with each piece of new music she puts out.

  • Gigwise

This EP is a gorgeous rearrangement of her songs, but it adds little dimension to the world of Punisher. Phoebe Bridgers fans will love how these versions highlight her voice and reconstruct some of her most beloved hits –unfortunately, it also reconstructs some misses.

Yes, this is an add-on EP to a commercial & critical breakthrough LP, and can’t be the must-listen that Punisher is. But this is a great bonus that’s more than just an add-on, from the one-and-only Phoebe Bridgers.

On the whole, this EP only adds to the growing interest in Bridgers’ potential and promise as a budding artist, whose work with Ethan Gruska, Conor Oberst, and now Rob Moose reveal she works well with others.

‘Copycat Killer’ is a full reworking, not just a slapdash remix, and for that reason alone it’s worth a listen, even if orchestras aren’t your usual cup of tea.

  • The Forty-Five

With ‘Copycat Killer’, Phoebe Bridgers neatly defies the throwaway feel of the music industry, inviting listeners to spend more time with her songs, to love them harder and harder – in turn, opening up the ground for whatever may come next.
