Critic Reviews
Show All-
All Music
At least half the album should satisfy Richie's longtime followers.
-
Soul Tracks
. . . "I Call It Love" raised hopes of that the album would be a big step forward artistically for Richie, and instead it is -- by far -- the highpoint on a collection that is listenable but not particularly distinctive.
-
PopMatters
Coming Home is an album that even Lionel Richie fans might dismiss. Though there are glimmers of substance, an album cannot stand on just two or three pretty good tracks.
-
AllMusic
Too much of Coming Home is merely pleasant -- particularly the adult contemporary fare, with the exception of "I Love You" -- or too conscious of remaining with the times.
-
Soul Express
To me there has been too much trying to appeal to the young set and this album is probably the worst album he has ever made.
-
PEOPLE
. . . Coming Home is still a very welcome return.
-
Okayplayer
Richie die-hards may find a few gems in the more traditional love ballads, like “What You Are” and “I Love You.” Overall, though, Coming Home is a painful listening experience.

Newsreview
. . . Richie has nothing new to offer here. Move along.
-
Napster
Here, Richie returns to R&B. . . . Welcome back, Lionel.

Overall this is definitly enough to put Lionel back on the map and out of his daughters shadow; hopefully for good.

Richie is still recording and performing, and his new CD, Coming Home, continues a tradition of pure pop craftsmanship that shows he's still at the top of his game.
