Cocky gave Kid Rock more country credibility with the hit duet with Sheryl Crow, "Picture", but at its heart, Cocky is a pure hard rock album. No pretention, just a classic rock-loving alcoholic pothead Midwestern rancher-turned-musician writing songs about the power of rock and roll, the loneliness of fame and the community of his creation -- a redneck paradise where bikers, hip-hoppers, hillbillies and middle class are united against the politically correct leftists and right-wing fanatics that hate Kid Rock and everything he stands for, let alone rock-n-roll.

Drowned in Sound
Production wise “Cocky” can’t be faulted, with some stunning use of panning and textures being employed. Kid Rock has pulled off another cracker of an album which deserves to be heard as he’s not a one trick pony and the Twisted Brown Trucker band perform the best I’ve ever heard them with some lighting fast solos and crunching riffage.

AV CLUB
Given Rock's rabid fan base, Cocky may continue the rap-rocker's commercial winning streak, but only one album after his breakthrough, Rock's amped-up blend of cock-rock, old-school braggadocio, and heavy-metal attitude is already yielding diminishing returns.

ALL MUSIC
One that roots itself deeper in classic rock than in hip-hop and one that isn't as gonzo or as funny, but is still much, much funnier and looser than any of its competitors, while rocking much harder.

While there are a lot of good songs and moments on Cocky it doesn't ultimately hold together that well as an album.
-
The Guardian
In Britain, Cocky becomes a curiously hollow experience. Stripped of its cultural context, there's almost nothing to it at all.
-
The Austin Chronicle
Cocky truly offers something for everyone: Dee-troit muscle, Southern comfort, wistful (but hardly remorseful) ballads such as "Midnight Train to Memphis," and a big old nut sack for all the haters to swing on.

It's not how big it is. It's what you do with it that counts

Rough Edge
Kid Rock may be considered just another American Bad Ass, but - after listening to "Cocky," I have come to the conclusion he is also a very talented musician who likes Southern rock, hip hop, beautiful women, beer and himself.

Kid Rock is growing up a little and life is more than sex and money.

HOTPRESS
Not that Cocky is lacking in its share of dumb ass, and indeed smart-ass, moments – just that it has a hell of a lot more to offer along the way.

Overall, "Cocky" is not bad. Kid Rock accomplishes his goal, which is to show more musical depth.
