Ciara

Ciara - is the fifth studio album by American singer Ciara, which was released on July 9, 2013. This album is the artist's first release under Epic Records, since publicly asking the now-defunct Jive Records to release her from her contractual obligations. The singer cited a lack of label support and financial funding for her previous albums Fantasy Ride (2009) and Basic Instinct (2010). On this fifth studio album, Ciara is reunited with her long-term mentor and friend L.A. Reid, chairman of Epic Records. Reid is credited with discovering Ciara in 2003 along with signing her to his LaFace Records label and executive-producing her debut studio album, Goodies (2004). - Wikipedia

  • Pitchfork

Ciara also touches on just about every facet of her style to date, and while she’s a more versatile, accomplished singer than when she started, her appeal remains essentially unchanged.

  • Consequence of Sound

Ciara is a crisp, clean album that doesn’t waste much motion. It’d be wise to indulge in it from time to time, though it’s rarely indulgent itself.

Self-titled, concept- and filler-free, stripped of unnecessary guest spots, and carried the whole way though by a contagious pop playfulness and a willingness to try on different styles

As a collection of potential singles from an artist who should have more #1’s, it’s a modest, calculated effort.

In fact, Ciara has quietly built up a formidable discography, and this eponymous set maintains the high quality.

In the end, Ciara has put forward an album that does little to push her career forward as it shows little artistic growth and absolutely no progression in the sound of act who has been in this industry for almost a decade.

The result isn't a muddled mess but another lean and focused set, despite the involvement of several writers and producers.

With only ten tracks, Ciara runs a bit short — The Evolution and Fantasy Ride both offer a lot more to chew on — but it certainly does feel like her most consistent, cohesive record to date.

Ciara is rhythmic and a forward looking record for the artist. It just does not leave a notable impression other than being just an album to listen to in passing rather than repeatedly.

Unfortunately, with a mere ten tracks on Ciara, the few missteps detract from its strong points and take away from an otherwise very impressive fifth album.

Ultimately, Ciara is a lean, enjoyable collection of tunes steeped in the deep bass and funk sounds of the south.

It's a shift that has allowed Ciara to make her most daring, experimental and forward-thinking record yet.

Ciara could have easily been a Frankenstein of a record, with all of these attempts to capture any popular trend in the marketplace leading to a disjointed body of work, however, the disc ends up being a cohesive work.

While it’s not a fantastic album, Ciara brings some stellar production, inspired ideas and performances, and a mostly on-point Ciara to the table to make yet another solid R&B project.

"Ciara" is packed with the kind of sweet, sexy-but-not-raunchy R&B that always seems to work. Her groove is back.

Overall the album is a good attempt but falls flat.

It is not great, and commercially and critically might go down as another hit-and-miss effort.

I feel like she should have stepped it up and showed out some more, but then again I see her simply being herself with the way she has handled music & videos.
